Chapter 6 - Collision Course

The violent impact shattered the passenger window into a million glittering shards of glass that rained down over the leather seats. Elena was thrown hard against the center console, the breath knocked entirely from her lungs as the SUV spun twice across the wet asphalt before slamming to a dead stop against a concrete planter. Flashing red and blue lights instantly painted the cabin in a disorienting strobe effect, accompanied by the blare of approaching sirens. Marcus was already moving, kicking open the driver’s side door and pulling Elena out onto the slick pavement before she could fully recover her equilibrium.

“Move, move, move!” Marcus shouted over the wail of sirens, grabbing her arm and dragging her behind the concrete barrier of a closed subway entrance.

Peering cautiously around the edge of the stone wall, Elena watched as three unmarked black cruisers boxed in their wrecked SUV. Uniformed officers spilled out with weapons drawn, but none of them wore standard city police patches; the tactical vests bore the insignia of a private federal enforcement contractor known as Vanguard Security—the exact firm Victoria Thorne retained for hostile corporate takeovers.

“They aren't arresting us, Marcus,” Elena whispered, her chest heaving as she wiped a streak of blood from her temple. “They’re executing a termination protocol.”

Marcus cursed under his breath, drawing a compact sidearm from his shoulder holster and checking the magazine with practiced efficiency. “Vanguard doesn't operate on domestic soil without direct authorization from the Department of Justice’s civil asset forfeiture division. Julian has completely weaponized the federal government against us.”

Elena’s mind raced through the tactical reality of their situation. They were trapped on Fifth Avenue with hostile federal contractors hunting them, David Vance was compromised, and the physical ledger in her briefcase was their only remaining leverage. She reached down to check the briefcase; the heavy metal latches were secure, but the leather was scuffed from the crash.

Suddenly, her phone vibrated in her pocket. She pulled it out, expecting another taunting message from Julian, but the screen displayed a live video feed from the front gates of their mansion.

The video showed a fleet of heavy-duty moving trucks parked on the grand lawn, workers rapidly loading crates of priceless art and historical documents into the back while Evelyn supervised from the portico, wrapped in her signature satin robe, holding a glass of champagne as she watched the rain wash away the last traces of Elena’s existence from the estate.

“They aren't waiting for sunrise,” Elena muttered, her eyes narrowing as she watched the live feed. “They’re looting the family vault right now.”

Marcus looked over her shoulder at the screen, a grim expression settling across his weathered face. “That means the physical vault keys inside the house are currently active. If we can get back inside the mansion while they’re distracted by the moving operation, we can access the master mainframe terminal and override the corporate freeze from the inside.”

Elena looked from the phone screen back to the street where the Vanguard agents were combing the wreckage of their SUV. A slow, daring plan formed in her mind.

“Give me your jacket,” Elena said, stripping off her ruined white blazer.

Marcus blinked in surprise, but before he could object, a blinding spotlight from a police drone illuminated their hiding spot.
