Chapter 4 - Underground Alliance

The damp air of the subway maintenance tunnel clung to Elena’s skin as she sprinted deeper into the subterranean maze, the distant rumble of late-night trains vibrating through the soles of her shoes. Her white suit was now stained with soot and water, but adrenaline fueled every movement as she navigated the rusted pipes and flickering emergency lamps. She knew Marcus would alert the station patrols within minutes, meaning she had a very narrow window to reach the street-level exit on Fifth Avenue. Pulling her phone from her pocket, she dialed the only person in the city Julian hadn't managed to intimidate or buy off: David Vance, her father’s former chief counsel and the man who had drafted the original prenuptial agreement that Julian was currently trying to dismantle in secret.

The phone rang three times before a gravelly, exhausted voice answered on the other end, cutting off her breath before she could even speak.

“I told you years ago that marrying him was a mistake, Elena,” David said without preamble, the sound of rustling papers audible in the background. “I’m looking at the amended deeds right now. Julian filed the transfer papers at 11:45 PM. By sunrise, your entire portfolio legally becomes his sole property under the abandonment clause of your marriage contract.”

Elena gripped the phone tighter, her knuckles aching. “He locked me out of the house, David. He gave me a hotel card and threw me out in the rain like a common trespasser. But he missed one crucial detail: the Cayman trust isn’t listed in the corporate merger.”

There was a sharp intake of breath on the other end of the line, followed by a profound silence that stretched uncomfortably across the digital connection.

“You found the physical ledger,” David whispered, awe and fear warring in his voice. “If Julian discovers you have that trust documentation, he won't just ruin you financially; he will make sure you disappear before the sun rises over Manhattan.”

“Let him try,” Elena replied, her voice dropping an octave into a tone of chilling resolve. “Meet me at the 86th Street subway platform in twenty minutes. Bring the encryption keys for the offshore accounts.”

She hung up before he could argue, picking up her pace as the tunnel began to incline upward toward the grated street-level exit. Pushing open the heavy street grate, she hoisted herself up onto the rain-slicked pavement of Fifth Avenue, blending seamlessly into the shadows of the towering skyscrapers.

As she rounded the corner toward the rendezvous point, the blinding headlights of a black SUV suddenly swept across the sidewalk, blocking her path and cutting off her escape route entirely. The passenger door swung open to reveal a grinning face she never expected to see again.
