Chapter 14 - The Cell Block Call

The encrypted audio channel crackled with static before Julian’s voice emerged from the smartphone speaker, sounding strained, frantic, and entirely stripped of the arrogant authority he had wielded just hours earlier. Standing alone in the sunlit boardroom, Elena held the phone a few inches from her ear, listening as the man who had evicted her into the storm desperately begged for a negotiated settlement.
“Elena, you have to listen to me,” Julian whispered harshly from the federal holding cell, the distant sound of echoing iron doors audible in the background. “Victoria Thorne is pinning the entire fraud operation on my shoulders. If you let the federal prosecutor proceed with these indictments, I’ll spend the next thirty years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary.”
Elena didn't interrupt; she simply listened, her expression remaining completely impassive as she looked out over the Manhattan skyline where the afternoon traffic flowed in orderly lines far below.
“When you stood at the mansion door last night and handed me that golden key card,” Elena said evenly, her voice cutting through his frantic pleas with chilling precision, “you made it entirely clear that our marriage, our partnership, and my decade of work meant nothing to you. Why should I show you mercy now?”
There was a long, suffocating silence on the other end of the line, broken only by the sound of Julian’s heavy, panicked breathing.
“I was pressured by the board, Elena! Victoria convinced me that the hostile takeover was the only way to save the company from bankruptcy!” Julian lied desperately, his voice cracking under the weight of his utter desperation. “We can settle this quietly out of court. I’ll sign over all my remaining personal assets, I’ll leave the country, and you’ll never have to see my face again.”
“You already signed everything over, Julian,” Elena replied coldly. “The federal auditors have already seized your personal accounts, your vehicles, and your offshore holdings under the RICO statutes. You don't have anything left to bargain with.”
Before Julian could scream another threat, a guard's voice interrupted the call on his end, ordering him to hang up the phone as the heavy steel door of the holding cell slammed shut with a deafening clang.
The line went dead, the silence rushing back into the boardroom like a physical weight.
Elena pulled the phone away from her ear, powered the device down completely, and slid it into her briefcase alongside the original charters and the repatriated financial ledgers.
Marcus walked back into the boardroom, holding a secure encrypted tablet displaying the final audit reports from the federal banking commission.
“The asset repatriation is complete, ma’am,” Marcus reported, saluting her with a crisp, respectful nod. “The board has officially ratified your appointment as CEO and Chairwoman of Sterling Holdings, effective immediately.”
Elena walked over to the central executive chair, placed her hands firmly on the polished mahogany surface, and looked out at the empty boardroom where her future had finally been secured.

Suddenly, the heavy glass doors of the boardroom swung open once more, revealing an unexpected visitor standing in the doorway holding a sealed manila envelope bearing the federal court’s highest classification seal.
