Chapter 5 - The Unexpected Passenger

The interior of the black SUV was suffocatingly warm, smelling faintly of expensive leather and bitter espresso. Elena froze on the rain-slicked sidewalk, her hand instinctively tightening around the handle of her silver suitcase as the vehicle's door swung fully open. Sitting in the back seat, casually sipping from a silver flask, was none other than Marcus—the very man who had chased her through the basement archives just twenty minutes prior. He didn't look like a pursuer anymore; instead, he wore an expression of weary amusement, gesturing with the flask toward the empty leather seat beside him.
“Get in, Elena,” Marcus said, his voice completely devoid of the menace he had projected down in the vaults. “Unless you fancy spending the rest of the night explaining your designer suit to a precinct full of Julian’s payroll cops.”
Elena didn't move, her instincts screaming a silent warning as the rain continued to plaster her dark brown hair against her cheeks. “You chased me through the archives, Marcus. You locked the doors.”
“And if I hadn't, Victoria Thorne’s private security detail would have intercepted you before you reached the maintenance tunnel,” Marcus replied smoothly, leaning across the seat to push the door open wider. “Julian thinks he owns everyone, but some of us remember who actually signed our employment contracts back when your father ran this company. Now, are you going to get in, or do you want to stand here and wait for the squad cars?”
Weighing her options in a split second, Elena stepped into the vehicle and slammed the door shut, the heavy thud cutting off the sound of the storm outside.
Marcus tossed a clean dry towel onto her lap without looking back at the driver, who immediately pulled away from the curb and merged into the sparse late-night traffic.
“David Vance can't meet you at 86th Street,” Marcus said, pulling a encrypted tablet from his briefcase and sliding it across the console toward her. “His office was raided twenty minutes ago by federal agents working on a federal wire fraud tip—filed electronically by Julian’s legal team using your personal login credentials.”
Elena stared at the tablet screen, her breath catching in her throat as she read the fabricated arrest warrant bearing her own forged digital signature. They hadn't just stolen her empire; they were framing her for financial crimes that carried a thirty-year federal prison sentence.
“They are moving faster than we anticipated,” Elena said, her voice dangerously calm as she swiped through the digital files.
“That’s because Julian isn't acting alone,” Marcus warned, glancing at her through the rearview mirror. “Someone much higher up in the federal banking commission just authorized the asset freeze.”

Before Elena could process the warning, the SUV violently swerved, tires screeching as another vehicle slammed broadside into their passenger door.
