Chapter 11 - The Noon Ultimatum

The heavy steel handcuffs clicked shut around Julian’s wrists with a sharp, metallic ring that echoed off the mahogany bookshelves of the private study. The lead detective escorted him toward the door, while Victoria Thorne stood rigidly by the fireplace, her legal composure momentarily shattered as she realized her own firm’s name was plastered across the forged documents now resting in Elena’s briefcase. Julian didn't struggle or shout; instead, he offered Elena one final, venomous look as he was led past her toward the grand staircase.

“You might win the morning, Elena,” Julian whispered coldly as he passed her shoulder, his breath smelling of bitter espresso. “But by sundown, the board will vote to liquidate every remaining asset to pay off the foreign debt I incurred in your name.”

Elena didn't flinch, maintaining her calm, restrained composure as the footsteps of the police escort faded down the hallway.

Victoria Thorne adjusted her tailored blazer, attempting to regain her professional facade as she stepped toward the desk. “You’ve made a catastrophic mistake, Mrs. Sterling. Even if Julian is detained, the emergency board meeting scheduled for noon has already secured a quorum of proxies favoring the asset sale.”

Marcus stepped forward, blocking Victoria’s path to the exit. “The proxy votes were cast using digital tokens tied to Julian’s personal accounts, Counselor. Under federal statute 103-B, any proxy authorization executed during an active criminal investigation is legally null and void.”

Victoria’s eyes widened in sudden alarm as she realized the legal trap they had walked into. She grabbed her leather briefcase from the table and hurried out of the study without uttering another word, desperate to distance herself from Julian’s sinking ship.

Elena looked at her watch: 11:15 AM. The emergency board meeting at the corporate headquarters was set to begin in forty-five minutes.

“We need to get to the boardroom before the directors take their seats,” Elena said, snapping her silver suitcases shut and checking the contents of the briefcase one final time.

Marcus nodded, handing her a fresh communications earpiece. “My team has secured the executive elevators at Sterling Holdings. David Vance managed to post bail from his holding cell and is waiting for us in the penthouse lobby with the genuine board registry.”

They moved quickly through the mansion, leaving the looting operation behind as the remaining movers scattered in panic upon seeing the police cruisers parked outside. Sliding back into the delivery van, they raced down the winding driveway and sped toward the financial district as the storm clouds finally began to part, letting a harsh, blinding midday sun pierce the Manhattan skyline.

As the van pulled up to the glittering glass monolith of Sterling Holdings, Elena looked up at the towering banner bearing her family name.

Stepping out onto the marble plaza, she straightened her tactical jacket, took a steadying breath, and strode through the revolving glass doors toward the elevators.

The digital display above the executive elevator read 45th Floor as the doors slid open, revealing David Vance standing waiting for them with a grim, determined expression on his face.
