Chapter 9 - The Sky Above the Treeline

The blinding white searchlight from the hovering helicopter pinned Julian and Emma against the wet forest floor like insects under a microscope. The deafening roar of the twin rotors whipped the surrounding pine branches into a violent frenzy, sending a stinging spray of rain and debris raining down over them.
Julian instinctively shielded the newborn infant with his own body, pressing the baby close to his chest beneath his torn shirt, while Emma clutched his arm with desperate strength.
The heavy aluminum ladder clattered down onto the muddy terrain just a few feet away from them. Down the rungs descended two heavily armed tactical agents in federal black uniforms, followed closely by the prosecutor whose voice had warned Julian over the car dashboard just hours earlier.
The prosecutor stepped forward, his expression a mask of bureaucratic coldness as he shielded his eyes from the rotor wash. “Julian Vance! Put down the child and step away from the woman. You are under arrest for treason, embezzlement, and conspiracy against the United States government!”
Julian stood up slowly, keeping the baby securely wrapped against his heart, his dark eyes blazing with furious defiance as he glared at the man he had once considered a trusted ally. “Treason? You hypocritical bastard! You’re on Marcus Vance’s payroll, aren't you? How many millions did he wire to your offshore account to orchestrate this entire setup?”
The prosecutor’s face twitched slightly at the accusation, but he maintained his rigid composure, gesturing sharply to the armed agents flanking him. “Watch your tongue, Julian. Marcus Vance is currently incapacitated in his penthouse, yes—which leaves a massive power vacuum in the corporate sector. We don't need him anymore to execute the restructuring of your company. We need the encryption keys currently sitting in your coat pocket.”
So that was it. Marcus hadn't acted alone; he was merely the public face of a much larger, deeply entrenched syndicate involving high-ranking federal officials who wanted complete control over Julian’s proprietary technology algorithms. The murder setup, the framing, the midnight chase—it was all a massive coup designed to seize control of a multi-billion-dollar artificial intelligence network that could manipulate global markets.
“You’ll never get the keys,” Julian snarled, stepping backward toward the dense wall of jagged boulders bordering the ravine. “I’d rather destroy the servers myself than hand them over to corrupt tyrants in suits.”
“You don't have a choice, Julian,” the prosecutor replied coldly, nodding to the agents. “Take him down. Leave the woman and the child; they’re of no use to us once the asset is secured.”

The agents raised their tactical weapons, their laser sights painting bright red dots across Julian’s chest. Emma screamed out in terror, trying to pull Julian back, but before the agents could pull their triggers, a deafening explosion echoed from the ridge above them, shaking the earth beneath their feet and plunging the entire clearing into sudden, absolute darkness.
