Chapter 4 - Shadows Behind the Glass

Julian froze in his tracks, his blood running cold as the chilling sound of Emma’s voice echoed down the long, dimly lit hallway. He dropped into a low, silent crouch, moving with calculated stealth across the expensive hardwood floor toward the source of the noise. The panic that had driven him across the city suddenly crystallized into a cold, lethal focus. Whoever touched Emma in this penthouse was going to answer to him, betrayal or no betrayal.

Peering cautiously around the corner of the master bedroom doorway, Julian witnessed a scene that shattered every remaining theory he had constructed. Emma was pinned against the floor-to-ceiling glass window, her cream-colored wrap dress torn at the shoulder, while Marcus Vance stood over her with a menacing, twisted smile. Marcus held a heavy leather briefcase in one hand and a menacing silver revolver in the other, pressing the cold barrel dangerously close to Emma’s trembling temple.

“You thought you could double-cross me and walk away with the hard drives, you ungrateful little bitch?” Marcus hissed, his voice venomous and dripping with malice. “Julian is a fool, but you? You should have known better than to steal from people who own the judges in this city.”

Emma let out a ragged sob, her hands frantically shielding her swollen belly as she glared up at Marcus with pure defiance. “I never wanted any part of your sick game, Marcus! You threatened my family, you forced me to spy on Julian, but I'm done! I'd rather die than hand over those files to destroy an innocent man's life, even if Julian is a monster himself!”

Julian’s chest tightened as if a physical fist were crushing his heart. She had been coerced. All those late nights, all the secretive phone calls, the distant stares—she had been protecting him all along, blackmailed by the most dangerous man in the financial sector. The guilt crashed down on Julian with the force of a tidal wave. He had stood in that kitchen just an hour ago, handing her cab fare like a piece of trash, when she had been fighting a silent war to keep him alive.

Marcus raised the gun slightly, his thumb pulling back the hammer with a sharp, terrifying click that echoed through the quiet penthouse. “A noble speech, Emma. Truly heartbreaking. Too bad no one is going to hear you scream up here in the clouds. Once I put a bullet in your head, we’ll stage it as a tragic break-in, and Julian will take the fall for your murder. It’s poetic, really.”

Julian knew he had mere seconds to act. He had no weapon, no backup, and the element of surprise was his only advantage. His eyes darted frantically around the hallway, landing on a heavy bronze sculpture resting on a nearby mahogany display pedestal. Without a second thought, Julian sprinted down the corridor, his footsteps muffled by the thick Persian runner rug.

Marcus’s head snapped toward the doorway just as Julian launched himself through the air, hurling the heavy bronze sculpture straight at Marcus’s head with all the fury of a desperate, betrayed husband ready to tear the world apart.
