Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Penthouse

Julian didn't hesitate. He grabbed his car keys, shoved the incriminating cash and the foreign wedding ring deep into his coat pocket, and burst out through the front garage. The engine of his luxury sedan roared to life with an aggressive growl, tearing out of the driveway and kicking up a spray of gravel and rainwater. His eyes were locked firmly onto the glowing blue navigation line on Emma's spare smartphone, which he had tossed onto the passenger seat. The GPS tracker showed the taxi moving at a steady, relentless speed toward the financial district.

As he navigated the slick, winding midnight streets of the city, a chaotic storm of memories battered his mind. He remembered how Emma had insisted on moving into this secluded suburban neighborhood just months before her pregnancy became visible. She had claimed it was for the quiet, for the fresh air, for the baby's health. Now, looking at the cold reality of the situation, he realized it was a cage. A gilded cage designed to keep him isolated while she coordinated his financial ruin with Marcus.

Yet, as the towering skyscrapers of downtown began to loom through the heavy downpour, a conflicting emotion pierced through his anger. He remembered the genuine terror in her eyes back in the kitchen, the way she had cradled her belly while breathing through physical pain. Was she truly a mastermind working alongside Marcus, or was she just another pawn trapped in Marcus’s terrifying game of corporate and personal manipulation? Marcus Vance was a man who left a trail of destroyed lives behind him, and pregnant women in distress meant nothing to a predator like that.

Julian’s tires screeched as he pulled up illegally in front of the ultra-exclusive obsidian tower where Marcus maintained his private penthouse. He killed the engine, grabbed Emma's phone, and bolted toward the towering glass lobby doors. The night security guard stepped forward, recognizing Julian from previous board meetings, but Julian didn't wait for pleasantries.

“Mr. Vance is expecting me,” Julian lied smoothly, flashing a dangerous, commanding look that made the guard hesitate.

Without waiting for clearance, Julian slipped past the front desk and punched the private elevator code into the stainless-steel keypad. The cabin rocketed upward toward the penthouse suite, the digital floor numbers ticking past at a dizzying speed. With every floor they cleared, the air in the small elevator felt heavier, charged with an impending confrontation that could destroy what little remained of Julian’s life.

The elevator doors chimed softly and slid open directly into the dimly lit, ultra-modern foyer of Marcus’s penthouse. The space was dead silent, save for the low hum of an expensive air filtration system. Julian stepped out onto the polished concrete floor, his eyes scanning the vast, open-concept living room that overlooked the sparkling, rain-drenched city skyline.

That was when he heard a faint, muffled sound coming from the master hallway down the left wing—a sharp, unmistakable gasp of pain followed by a familiar, desperate female voice pleading for help.
