Chapter 6 - The Federal Mirage

The glowing screen of the car’s dashboard illuminated the panic washing over Julian’s face as the federal prosecutor’s words hung heavily in the air. Emma gasped, her hand flying to her mouth as she stared at the screen in absolute horror. The net hadn't just closed around them; it had been rigged from the very beginning.
“Framed?” Julian’s voice cracked with disbelief, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the steering wheel. “That’s impossible! I have the hard drives, I have the financial records proving Marcus was the architect of the entire offshore network in my coat pocket right now!”
“It doesn’t matter what you have in your pocket, Julian,” the prosecutor replied, his voice strained with an urgency that signaled grave danger. “Marcus Vance anticipated every single move you could possibly make. Within minutes of the raid, his legal team submitted an ironclad trail of digital signatures, corporate emails, and offshore wire transfers originating directly from your personal IP address. To the Department of Justice, you are public enemy number one.”
Emma began to hyperventilate, the stress contracting her abdomen with a sharp, terrifying pain that made her double over. “Julian, the baby... the contraction... it’s happening too fast.”
Julian’s heart plummeted. They couldn't go to a public hospital; the federal marshals would be staking out every medical facility in the tri-state area within the hour, waiting to slap handcuffs on a terrified, heavily pregnant woman and her fugitive husband. He had to think, and he had to think fast. Marcus Vance had poisoned every well in the city, but there was one place untouched by corporate tentacles—an old, abandoned family cabin tucked deep within the dense pine forests of upstate Vermont.
“Hold on to me, Emma. Just breathe,” Julian urged, his voice trembling as he slammed his foot down on the accelerator, pushing the sedan well past the speed limit as they veered off the main interstate onto a desolate, unpaved logging road.
The rain continued to lash against the windshield in relentless sheets, blurring the dense wall of pine trees into dark, menacing shadows. The car’s tires spun dangerously on the muddy terrain, but Julian fought the wheel with desperate determination, keeping the vehicle steady as they plunged deeper into the wilderness.
Beside him, Emma squeezed her eyes shut, biting her lower lip until it bled to keep from screaming through the intense waves of labor. “Julian... we aren't going to make it to the cabin. The baby is coming now.”
Panic clawed at Julian’s throat. He pulled the car off the narrow dirt path into a dense grove of towering evergreens, killing the headlights to plunge them into absolute darkness. He scrambled out into the freezing rain, running around to open the passenger door and gently lifting Emma into his arms, carrying her toward the shelter of a massive, sprawling oak tree.
As he laid her down gently on a dry bed of pine needles, pulling his heavy dark button-down shirt off to wrap around her shivering shoulders, Emma clutched his arm with terrifying strength.
“Julian,” she whispered through ragged breaths, her eyes wide with a sudden, dreadful realization as she pointed toward the road behind them. “Look... headlights.”

Through the thick curtain of rain, two blinding sets of high beams cut through the darkness, slowly creeping down the secluded logging road toward their hiding spot.
