Chapter 5 - The Price of Redemption

The heavy bronze sculpture caught Marcus squarely in the shoulder, throwing off his aim just as a deafening gunshot shattered the penthouse window. Shards of safety glass exploded inward like a glittering rain of diamonds, clattering loudly against the concrete floor. Marcus roared in pain, dropping the revolver as he stumbled backward against the glass wall.
Julian didn't hesitate for a fraction of a second. He slammed his fist directly into Marcus’s jaw with a sickening crunch, sending the corporate raider crashing unconscious to the floor. The heavy silver revolver skidded across the smooth surface, coming to a halt near the edge of the shattered window.
Breathing heavily, Julian dropped to his knees beside Emma, his hands trembling as he gently pulled her away from the dangerous shards of glass. “Emma! Oh god, Emma, are you alright? Talk to me!”
Emma flinched away from his touch initially, her eyes wide with shock and lingering terror, but as she looked into his face and saw the raw, genuine anguish written there, her defenses finally crumbled. She buried her face in his chest, weeping uncontrollably as the immense psychological weight of the past year poured out of her in ragged, breathless gasps.
“He had my brother, Julian,” she sobbed into his dark shirt, her fingers clutching tightly at his fabric. “Marcus had him locked up in a foreign facility on trumped-up charges. He said if I didn't feed him your company's proprietary algorithms, he’d let him rot there... and then when I got pregnant, he threatened the baby too.”
Julian wrapped his arms tightly around her, pressing his face into her brown hair as hot tears stung the corners of his own eyes. “I know, my love, I know. I’m so sorry. I was blind, I was arrogant, and I pushed you away when you needed me most. But it’s over now. We’re going to fix this together, I promise you.”
He gently helped her to her feet, keeping a protective arm wrapped firmly around her waist as they navigated around the unconscious form of Marcus Vance. Julian retrieved Emma's smartphone from the floor where it had fallen, slipping it into his pocket alongside the incriminating cash and the foreign wedding ring. They stepped back into the private elevator, watching the doors slide shut on the nightmare of the penthouse suite.
Down in the lobby, the security guard barely had time to look up before Julian marched past him with Emma tucked securely at his side. They climbed into the luxury sedan, the city lights blurring into streaks of neon through the rain-streaked windshield as Julian hit the highway heading out toward the state line.
They drove in silence for miles, the only sound being the rhythmic hum of the engine and Emma's steadying breath. But just as they crossed the county bridge, the dashboard screen flickered violently, overriding the navigation system with an incoming video call from an unknown, restricted number.
Julian pressed accept, and the face of the federal prosecutor he had trusted most flashed onto the screen, speaking words that froze the blood in Julian's veins.

“Julian, do not go home,” the prosecutor said grimly. “Federal agents just raided your house. You’ve been framed as the mastermind behind Marcus Vance’s entire international money-laundering ring.”
