Chapter 7 - The Barrel of Accountability

The heavy, metallic clack of the shotgun sliding into battery reverberated off the damp courtyard stones with terrifying clarity. Every police officer in the vicinity instantly dropped into tactical stances, drawing their weapons and screaming overlapping orders into the midnight air.
"Drop the weapon! Drop it now!" Detective Miller roared, sweeping his service pistol toward the dark alcove beside the classical fountain where the sound had originated.
From the shadows stepped a heavily built man in a dark tactical vest, his face obscured by a black balaclava. In his grip, he held a standard-issue riot shotgun, the barrel pointed directly not at the police, but dead-center at Special Agent Vance.
Agent Vance did not flinch. He didn't even raise his hands. He simply stared at the armed intruder with an expression of mild, almost bored irritation.
"Lower your weapon, Marcus," Agent Vance commanded effortlessly, though the man behind the mask was clearly not the young financial assistant who had wept on the ground moments earlier.
The masked man let out a harsh, rasping laugh that distorted through his mask’s voice modulator. "You think you own the board, old man? You forgot about the silent partners in Zurich. The transfer wasn't to your federal receivership. It was rerouted ten minutes ago."
Julian snapped his head up from the cruiser, a frantic, desperate glimmer of hope returning to his hollow eyes. "The Zurich override! You actually executed the contingency code?"
"Shut up, Julian!" Agent Vance snapped, a rare flash of genuine anger breaking through his icy facade. He took a half-step forward, ignoring the shotgun barrel inches from his chest. "If you execute that transfer, the entire European market collapses, and Interpol will have a lock on your coordinates before you reach the gate."
Elena stood paralyzed between the two factions, the phone still clutched in her stiff fingers. The sheer scale of the deception was staggering. This wasn't merely a white-collar embezzlement scheme or a messy divorce; it was an international financial war zone, and she had willingly walked onto the battlefield wearing a sparkly green gown and diamond earrings.
Clara maintained her unnervingly calm posture, her hand resting casually on her swollen stomach as she watched the armed standoff with detached amusement.
"You're too late, Agent Vance," Clara said softly, her voice carrying easily over the tension. "The transfer completed at precisely 5:50 AM. Look at your phone."
Agent Vance’s jaw tightened. Slowly, deliberately, he reached into his overcoat and pulled out a secure satellite device. The screen was flashing a relentless crimson warning light, accompanied by a bold text notification: ASSET DRAINED - PROTOCOL OMEGA INITIATED.
Detective Miller kept his weapon trained on the masked man while darting a suspicious glance at the federal agent. "Agent Vance, what the hell is Protocol Omega? Explain yourself right now or I'm arresting the entire lot of you under suspicion of treason."
The masked man lowered the shotgun slightly, pressing a small keypad attached to his tactical vest. "Protocol Omega means the foundation is liquidated, the accounts are wiped, and nobody leaves this courtyard alive until the physical ledger is handed over."

The masked man slowly peeled off his balaclava, revealing the scarred, weathered face of a man Elena had not seen in over a decade—her own uncle, Thomas, who was supposed to have drowned in a shipwreck twenty years ago.
