Chapter 13 - The Sniper on the Roof

The sharp crack of the gunshot echoed off the stone walls of the courtyard like a rolling thunderclap. Instinct took over instantly; Detective Miller dived behind the stone rim of the fountain, dragging Clara down with him into the shallow water, while the two accompanying officers scrambled for cover behind the luxury vintage car, their service weapons drawn and scanning the darkened rooflines above.

Elena dropped to her knees in the wet gravel, her hands flying over her head as another round slammed into the masonry just above them, sending a shower of stone chips cascading down into her hair.

"Sniper on the north parapet!" one of the officers yelled into his shoulder radio, his voice strained with panic. "Active shooter, north roof! Requesting immediate tactical backup!"

Special Agent Vance didn't flinch. Despite the gunfire raining down from above, he remained standing tall near the ivy-covered alcove, his cold eyes scanning the upper ledge of the mansion with practiced calculation. He reached into his cashmere overcoat, not for a weapon, but for a small, encrypted radio transmitter.

"Thomas, you absolute idiot," Agent Vance muttered into the device, his jaw clenching with suppressed fury. "Call off your sniper before I level the entire parapet."

Static hissed from the transmitter for a tense, agonizing second before Uncle Thomas’s raspy voice crackled back through the tiny speaker.

"I told you, the ledger stays with the family, Vance," Thomas’s voice echoed, loud enough to carry faintly from the upper balcony. "Either Elena hands over the key to the underground vault, or the sniper puts a hollow-point bullet through your federal associate's chest."

Detective Miller peered cautiously over the fountain rim, water dripping from his uniform jacket. He looked across at Agent Vance, the realization dawning on him that this entire operation had splintered into a multi-sided civil war.

"Your own family is hunting you," Miller said grimly, keeping his weapon aimed steadily at the agent. "You brought us into a trap, Vance."

"This wasn't a trap for you, Detective," Agent Vance replied coolly, finally stepping away from the alcove and walking deliberately toward the center of the courtyard into the open view of the roof. "This was a family reckoning fifty years in the making."

Elena slowly pushed herself up from the wet gravel, her hands trembling as she felt the heavy brass key pressing firmly against her palm inside her closed fist. She looked up toward the shadowy silhouette of the north parapet, where the red laser sight of the sniper rifle swept across the stonework like an erratic, glowing predator.

Clara was shivering violently in the fountain, her soaked red sequined gown plastered to her skin, her eyes darting frantically between the roof and the armed officers. The immaculate, untouchable facade she had maintained all evening had completely evaporated, leaving behind the desperate expression of a gambler who had lost everything on a single bad hand.

"Elena," Clara whispered hoarsely across the wet pavement, her voice cracking. "If Thomas gets that vault open, he doesn't just take the money. H
