Chapter 1 - The Echo of Stolen Seconds

The damp midnight air of the courtyard clung to Elena’s bare shoulders like a second skin, heavy with the scent of wet stone, expensive French perfume, and impending disaster. Water from the classical fountain trickled rhythmically into the basin behind them, masking the frantic thumping of her own heart. She clutched her small beaded clutch so tightly her knuckles turned bone-white. Beside her, Julian stood frozen in his immaculate black tuxedo, his jaw slack as if he had just seen a ghost walk out of the water. Across the polished cobblestones, illuminated by the amber glow of vintage wall sconces and the headlights of the idling luxury car, Clara stood in her heavy red sequined gown. Her baby bump pushed proudly against the fabric, framing a terrifyingly calm silhouette. Julian checked the platinum wristwatch on his wrist, his dark eyes narrowing slightly as the second hand ticked past the hour.

"5:48," Julian said, his voice cutting through the thick silence with mechanical precision.

Julian flinched, his eyes darting wildly between Clara and the dark interior of the vintage automobile. The panic radiating from him was palpable, a stark contrast to the glacial composure of the woman standing before them.

"What are you doing here?" Julian demanded, his voice cracking with a sudden, ugly spike of desperation.

Clara did not blink. Her gaze remained fixed on a point just above Julian’s left shoulder, entirely devoid of warmth or hesitation.

"You missed our meeting at the bank, Julian," Clara replied evenly, her tone slicing through the tension like a scalpel.

"That meeting was confidential!" Julian hissed, taking a defensive step forward while shielding Elena with his arm. "Nobody was supposed to know about the accounts until Monday morning! How did you even track this car?"

Elena stared at Clara, the color draining entirely from her face. The glittering green silk of her gown suddenly felt like a cage.

"Julian, who is she talking about? What accounts?" Elena whispered, her voice trembling as she looked between the two men.

"Stay out of this, Elena," Julian snapped, his eyes flashing with a warning that bordered on outright threat.

"Stay out of it?" Clara laughed softly, a humorless sound that sent a shiver down Elena’s spine. "She’s wearing the emerald necklace you bought with the liquidation funds, Julian. She has every right to know whose child she is helping you abandon."

Julian lunged forward, his face contorting in rage. "Shut your mouth, Clara! You don't know anything about what we planned!"

Clara stepped back smoothly, her hand resting protectively over her swollen stomach. She reached into the pocket of her red gown and withdrew a heavy manila folder, holding it up in the dim light.

"I know everything," Clara whispered, her eyes locking onto Julian’s with terrifying clarity. "And the police are already opening the vault."
