Chapter 12 - The Grip of the Patriarch

The heavy, suffocating scent of expensive tobacco and cold cologne washed over Elena as Special Agent Vance pinned her arms securely against her sides. She struggled violently, kicking backward against his shins, but his grip was like a vice forged from decades of calculated ruthlessness.
"Let me go!" Elena choked out, thrashing against his hold as the freezing mist from the fountain coated her face.
Special Agent Vance didn't budge an inch. With effortless strength, he dragged her backward into the shadows of the alcove away from the edge of the fountain, where Clara was frantically coughing and clawing her way out of the shallow basin, her heavy red sequined gown dripping and ruined.
"Quiet down, Elena," Agent Vance murmured, his voice frighteningly calm as he held her in place. "You've caused quite enough disruption for one evening."
Across the courtyard, the heavy oak doors of the carriage house swung wide open, flooding the cobblestones with a harsh, glaring white light. Detective Miller stepped out, flanked by two armed officers, his expression grim and resolute as he scanned the area for the source of the commotion.
"What's going on out here?" Miller demanded, raising his voice over the hum of the generators as he marched directly toward the fountain. "I heard a scuffle and a splash!"
Clara pulled herself up from the fountain rim, shivering violently in her soaked, heavy dress, her hair plastered to her cheeks. She pointed a trembling, manicured finger directly at Elena, her voice dripping with venom.
"She attacked me!" Clara screamed, the aristocratic composure completely shattered. "She pushed me into the fountain and tried to steal the federal archive key!"
Detective Miller stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes darting from the dripping Clara to Special Agent Vance, who was currently holding a struggling Elena in a firm restraint. Miller's hand instinctively hovered over his holster as he drew his weapon halfway.
"Release her, Agent Vance," Miller ordered, his tone laced with authoritative suspicion. "Step away from Mrs. Vance immediately."
Agent Vance slowly loosened his grip, though he didn't let go entirely. He looked down at Elena with a cold, analytical gaze. "She has the archive key, Detective. The key to the underground vault containing the unauthorized ledger linking my son's firm to the international syndicate. If she takes that key past these gates, the entire federal investigation collapses."
Elena gasped for air, glaring fiercely at her father-in-law. "He's lying! This isn't a federal investigation! It's a family shakedown to steal my family's remaining assets!"
Detective Miller looked back and forth between them, visibly torn between federal protocol and local law enforcement duty. He stepped closer, leveling his service pistol at Agent Vance. "I don't care about your federal directives anymore. Put your hands behind your back, Agent Vance. You're both under arrest for unlawful detainment and coercion."

Before Miller could take another step, a sharp, deafening gunshot echoed from the roof of the mansion overhead, sending a bullet kicking into the gravel mere inches from the detective's boots.
