Chapter 4 - The Shadow by the Gate

The harsh metallic echo of the handcuffs snapping shut hung suspended in the air, immediately eclipsed by the chilling sound of hurried footsteps crunching across the gravel near the rear servants' entrance. Every head snapped toward the darkness cast by the towering oleander bushes. A slender figure stumbled out from the shadows, gasping for breath as they clutched a heavy leather briefcase tightly against their chest. Under the flickering amber light, the pale, terror-stricken face of Marcus, Julian’s personal financial assistant, materialized into horrifying focus.
"Don't move!" an officer shouted, instantly pivoting and drawing his weapon toward the newcomer.
Marcus dropped to his knees instantly, the heavy briefcase slipping from his trembling fingers and hitting the cobblestones with a dull, echoing thud. The brass latches popped open under the impact, spilling a cascading waterfall of shredded documents and blue-tinted microcassettes across the wet stone.
"I didn't take it! I swear I was just destroying the secondary hard drives like he told me to!" Marcus sobbed hysterically, pressing his face into his hands while cowering against the pavement.
Julian’s face twisted into an expression of pure, unadulterated venom. "You miserable coward," Julian spat, straining uselessly against the grip of the arresting officer holding his arms. "You were supposed to be on the midnight ferry to Nantucket!"
"The ferry was cancelled, Julian!" Marcus wailed, looking up with tear-streaked cheeks and wide, panicked eyes. "The harbor master impounded every vessel registered under the holding company at 5:00 PM! We’ve been set up from the very beginning!"
Elena felt the ground practically drop out from beneath her feet. She grabbed the edge of the fountain basin for support, her vision blurring as the pieces of a much larger, darker puzzle violently locked into place. She looked from Julian, to the weeping assistant on the ground, and finally back to Clara, who stood watching the chaos unfold with an unsettling, statuesque serenity.
"Holding company?" Elena forced the words past her constricted throat, her voice barely a whisper. "Julian, what holding company? You told me our assets were solely in real estate and blue-chip stocks."
Clara slowly walked over to the spilled briefcase, knelt down with practiced, careful grace despite her advanced pregnancy, and picked up one of the shredded fragments of paper. She held it up to the light of the police cruiser, revealing a corporate letterhead bearing a name that made the blood run cold in Elena’s veins. It was not Julian’s firm. It was her own family’s legacy foundation—the trust fund her late father had established specifically for her future protection.
"He didn't just empty his firm's pension, Elena," Clara said quietly, rising to her feet and turning to face the stunned woman in the green gown. "He used your family trust as collateral to secure a multi-million-dollar bridge loan to fund his offshore accounts. Your signature was forged on every single loan document."
Elena staggered back as if she had been physically struck across the face. She turned her tear-filled eyes toward Julian, who had stopped struggling entirely, his head bowed in miserable resignation as the harsh red and blue lights spun endlessly around them.
Detective Miller stepped forward, pulling out a second pair of handcuffs and signaling two officers to secure the weeping assistant by the gate.
"Looks like we have a much bigger conspiracy on our hands," Detective Miller murmured, looking directly at Elena. "Ma'am, I'm going to need you to come down to the precinct immediately to verify your signature on these documents."

Before Elena could form a reply, her phone buzzed violently in her small beaded clutch, displaying an incoming video call from an unknown, encrypted number that instantly flashed across the screen.
