In the spring of the following year, when the mountain laurel was blooming in clusters of pale pink across the ravines, the sound of traditional woodworking returned to the plateau.
Beside the rushing waters of Clear Creek, three hundred yards from the main lodge, stood an old timber mill that had belonged to David’s grandfather.
David spent his mornings restoring the mill’s water-powered turbine. He replaced the rusted iron gears with hand-carved locust teeth, cleared the stone flume of winter debris, and oiled the vintage cast-iron bandsaws and joinery tables.
He did not build speculative commercial lumber.
He established *The Plateau Woodworking & Living Trust*—a non-profit craft cooperative dedicated to harvesting deadfall timber from the five hundred acres of protected forest to build hand-crafted cedar furniture, children’s therapeutic play equipment, and organic timber greenhouse frames for Appalachian community schools.
Clara joined him in the workshop every afternoon.
She wore a denim work shirt, sturdy canvas pants, and leather boots. Her health had blossomed into full, vibrant strength.
Using her background in fine arts, Clara designed intricate, hand-carved floral inlays for the furniture, using native cherry, black walnut, and river mother-of-pearl to create masterworks of traditional Appalachian craftsmanship.
Local apprentices from the valley began climbing the mountain road to learn the trade: young men and women who had lost jobs in closed factories, seeking an honest craft that could not be outsourced to corporate algorithms.
David taught them how to read the grain, how to sharpen a framing chisel with oil stones, and how to fell a damaged tree without disturbing the saplings growing in its shade.
