Chapter 14: The Vigil of the Hemlocks

On a clear, warm evening in late August, when the dusk was painting the sky in shades of violet, rose, and amber, David and Clara sat on the timber porch steps of the homestead lodge.

Down in the meadow, five-year-old Thomas was running through the grass, chasing fireflies with a glass mason jar, his bright laughter drifting up on the evening breeze like music.

David reached over, wrapping his strong arm around Clara’s shoulders, pulling her close against the cooling air.

Clara leaned her head against his chest, listening to the steady, unhurried beat of his heart—the same heart that had stood watch over her through forty-eight hours of freezing rain in the dark so many years ago.

""Do you remember the hospital window in Nashville, David?"" Clara asked softly, watching the first evening stars appear over the mountain ridge.

""I remember every second, Clara,"" David replied, kissing her temple.

""You looked so terrified that morning,"" Clara smiled gently, touching the cedar ring on his finger. ""You thought you had to carry the entire world on your shoulders.""

""I was a blind man, Clara,"" David whispered, his voice rich with profound humility. ""I thought strength was holding onto an empire. You taught me that strength is knowing when to open your hands and let the river carry away the ash.""
