Chapter 2: The Severed Marquee

Downstairs in the circular driveway, the engine of a silver Mercedes sedan idled.

Sitting in the passenger seat, dressed in a sweeping Chantilly lace bridal gown with a high lace collar, was Victoria Montgomery. Her mother, Beatrice Montgomery—chairwoman of the regional hospital auxiliary board—tapped her platinum watch against the steering wheel, her lips pressed into a thin, crimson line of aristocratic irritation.

""Where is he, Victoria?"" Beatrice snapped, looking through the glass revolving doors of the pavilion. ""The bishop is already at the estate. The Governor's security detail has taken their seats at the front arbor. It is half-past eleven.""

The glass doors slid open.

David walked out into the crisp November air. He was no longer the composed corporate heir they had groomed for the boardroom merger. His ivory jacket was unbuttoned, hanging crooked on his broad shoulders; his hair was disheveled, and his face was pale, streaked with the dry, salt-etched tracks of tears that had washed away every trace of performative charm.

He walked straight to the passenger door, opened it, and looked at Victoria.

Victoria gasped, reaching for his lapel. ""David! What happened to you? You look like you've seen a ghost! Did your sister have another crisis?""

""The wedding is off, Victoria,"" David said. His voice was low, devoid of anger, ringing with the terrifying finality of an iron gate swinging shut.

Beatrice leaned across the console, her pearls rattling against the leather dashboard. ""Have you lost your mind, David Vance? There are four million dollars in municipal timber credits tied to this union! The Montgomery and Vance foundations have finalized the joint land deed!""

David reached into his breast pocket, pulled out the gold signet ring of Vance Commercial Forestry—the symbol of the corporate empire he had spent twelve years building—and dropped it onto the white lace covering Victoria’s lap.

""Keep the land, Beatrice,"" David said, stepping away from the vehicle. ""Keep the contracts. Keep the marquee.""

""David!"" Victoria cried out, tears of humiliated fury welling in her eyes. ""Who is in that hospital?""

David stopped on the granite curb, looking back over his shoulder toward the glass tower rising eleven stories into the autumn sky.

""The woman who gave up her life so I could survive mine,"" David said.

He turned his back on the luxury sedan, walked back through the revolving doors, and hit the call button for the private express elevator to Floor 11.
