THE MEASURE OF MERCY

That evening, as the full harvest moon rose over the sandstone ridges, painting the forest canopy in silver and deep indigo, David led Clara up the timber path to the high rock ledge overlooking the valley.

The air was cool, smelling of fallen pine needles, wild mint, and the clean stone of the mountain bluffs.

David built a small, warm fire of cedar twigs between the rocks, its orange light dancing across their faces as they sat side by side on a thick wool blanket.

David reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, hand-carved wooden box made of native black walnut.

He placed it in Clara’s lap.

Clara opened the box.

Inside lay a simple, elegant band hand-carved from seasoned heart-cedar, its surface polished to a silky luster using natural beeswax, inlaid with a microscopic ribbon of native river copper that caught the firelight like a thin thread of liquid flame.

""In Nashville, I gave you a diamond ring that cost fifty thousand dollars, Clara,"" David said, his voice deep, steady, and filled with a devotion that had been tested in the darkest waters of the soul. ""I bought it with borrowed money to prove to a boardroom that I was successful. It didn't mean anything.""

He took her hand in his, his calloused fingers warm and strong against hers.

""This wood came from the cedar tree that stood outside the room where you took your first steps in the snow. It survived eighty winters of mountain storms without breaking.""

He looked into her hazel eyes, his voice dropping into a tender, holy whisper.

""Will you marry me again, Clara? Not for an empire. Not for a society column. But for this hearth, for these trees, and for every breath God gives us on this earth?""

Clara’s eyes filled with tears of pure, boundless peace. She threw her arms around his neck, pulling him down against her chest, her laughter ringing out across the vast, silent valley.
