Chapter 7: The Ultimatum

The tension inside the small tenement room thickened as Clara uncrossed her arms, stepping slightly closer to the edge of the threadbare rug. Her cold gaze swept over Lily and Maren before fixing back upon Julian, who remained kneeling by the bedside. She adjusted the collar of her cashmere coat, her expression returning to its customary mask of calculated detachment.

"You can play the devoted father for a few hours, Julian, but reality cannot be ignored," Clara said, her voice dropping into a measured, glacial tone. "If you intend to acknowledge this child publicly, the Vance Foundation will sever its ties with you immediately. The press will feast on the scandal of an heir born out of wedlock to a domestic employee. Our assets, our properties, and your seat on the board will be frozen under the morality clauses of the family trust."

Maren stiffened beside the cot, her grip tightening protectively around Lily’s shoulders. The pale luminescence of Maren’s skin looked stark against the dark wool of her shawl, her tear-reddened eyes flashing with sudden fear. She had lived in the shadows for three years precisely to avoid this kind of corporate warfare.

Julian slowly rose to his feet, towering over Clara. The stark contrast between his sophisticated attire and the impoverished surroundings highlighted the absurd duality of his life. He looked down at his wife, seeing her not as a partner or an equal, but as an architect of emotional desolation.

"Let them freeze the assets," Julian said, his voice dangerously calm. "Let the board strip me of every title and privilege. I spent thirty years building an empire of glass, and it took three seconds looking into my daughter's eyes to realize it was built on nothing."

Clara’s jaw tightened, a rare crack appearing in her elite composure. "You are throwing away everything your father built. You will be ruined, Julian. You will have nothing."

"I will have my daughter," Julian countered, stepping forward until he was mere inches away from her. "And you will never, under any circumstances, come near her or Maren again. If you attempt to use your lawyers, your money, or your influence to silence them, I will expose every single illegal acquisition and hush-money contract you orchestrated to protect the Vance name. I know where every body is buried, Clara. Do not test me."

Clara’s eyes flared with sudden realization. She recognized the look in his eyes; it was the same ruthless ambition he used in corporate boardrooms, now redirected entirely against her. Without another word, she turned sharply on her heel, wrenched the wooden door open, and stormed down the creaking staircase, leaving the heavy scent of her expensive perfume lingering in the stale air.
