Chapter 11: The Confrontation in the Dark

The two men in dark suits advanced slowly into the archive room, their heavy footsteps grinding against the stone floor. Julian backed away slightly, his mind racing for an escape route. The narrow window near the ceiling was too small, and the only exit was squarely blocked by Clara’s hired security.

"You really think you can silence me here?" Julian asked, keeping his voice steady while his pulse raced like a trapped animal. "The board knows I came back to the estate. If I don't check in by morning, an automatic audit of these files will be triggered."

Clara paused, a flicker of genuine uncertainty crossing her features before she masked it with cold arrogance. "You always were theatrical, Julian. But you underestimate how easily accidents happen in a house this old."

As the first guard lunged forward, Julian sidestepped sharply, grabbing a heavy brass paperweight from a nearby desk and hurling it directly at the wall sconce. The glass shattered instantly, plunging the archive room into sudden, near-total darkness, illuminated only by the faint silver moonlight filtering through the high window.

In the confusion, the guards collided in the cramped aisle. Julian didn't hesitate. He vaulted over a low filing cabinet, sprinting toward the open doorway before Clara or her men could recover. He burst out into the subterranean hallway, his polished shoes slapping against the stone floor as he ran for the grand staircase.

"Stop him!" Clara’s sharp voice echoed down the corridor, followed by the heavy thud of running boots behind him.

Julian pumped his arms, pushing his legs past the point of exhaustion. He scrambled up the stone steps, bursting out into the grand opulent hallway. The crystal chandeliers overhead seemed to mock his frantic escape as he bolted toward the heavy oak front doors.

He threw the doors open, tumbling out into the crisp autumn air just as a hand grazed the fabric of his jacket. He didn't look back. He sprinted across the gravel driveway, leaping over the low iron fence, and disappeared into the labyrinth of dark streets leading back toward the tenement.
