Chapter 12: Dawn of Reckoning

The first pale streaks of dawn were breaking over the city skyline when Julian pushed open the creaky wooden door of the tenement apartment. He was breathing heavily, his tuxedo jacket torn at the shoulder, but his eyes burned with fierce determination.

Maren was sitting quietly at the small wooden table, cradling a warm cup of tea, while Lily slept peacefully in the corner cot under her patchwork quilt. When Maren saw Julian burst through the door, she stood up abruptly, her face draining of color.

"Julian? What happened? Your jacket—"

"Clara knows everything," Julian interrupted, holding up a hand to steady her as he pulled the leather journal and the thick manila folder from his coat. He laid them flat on the wooden table, the pages catching the soft morning light. "She sent men after me in the archive vault. She realized I found the truth about the estate's origins."

Maren stared at the worn leather binding of the journal, her hands trembling as she reached out to touch it. "This... this is my grandfather’s ledger. The one my mother searched for her entire life before she passed away."

"It contains every record of how my father and Clara's family systematically stole your ancestors' estate," Julian said, pulling up a chair and sitting down beside her. "Clara didn't just hide Lily out of snobbery. She hid her because Lily is the rightful legal heir to half the properties currently held under the Vance Foundation."

The weight of the revelation hung heavily in the small room. Maren looked up, tears welling in her eyes, not of sorrow this time, but of vindication. "So all these years... we weren't just hidden away. We were silenced."

"Not anymore," Julian said firmly, taking her small, trembling hand in his. "We have the proof. We have the leverage. Today, we take it all back."

Just then, a sharp rap sounded against the exterior building door downstairs, followed by heavy footsteps ascending the wooden staircase. Julian and Maren exchanged a tense glance. Clara had moved faster than they anticipated, but this time, they were no longer running in the shadows.
