Chapter 10: The Vault of Secrets

The heavy leather journal felt like an anchor in Julian’s hands as he stood amidst the silent rows of mahogany filing cabinets. The flickering light of the brass desk lamp cast long, distorted shadows against the stone walls of the archive room. Every entry he had skimmed exposed another layer of deception, revealing how Clara had manipulated not only his life, but the very foundation upon which their high-society dynasty was constructed.

Footsteps echoed softly from the stone corridor outside the archive vault.

Julian’s instincts flared. He slipped the leather journal and Maren’s personnel file inside his dark tuxedo jacket, closing the false compartment with a quiet click. He extinguished the desk lamp just as the heavy steel doorway was pushed wider.

Clara stood in the threshold, her silhouette framed by the dim hallway sconces. She wore a sleek dark burgundy evening gown, identical to the one from the night before, as if she had not slept at all. Her sleek updo remained immaculate, but her eyes held a predatory glint that cut sharply through the gloom.

"I knew you’d come back here, Julian," Clara said, her voice echoing coldly off the stone walls. "Sentimental fools always return to the scene of their undoing."

Julian stepped out from the shadows of the filing rows, standing tall and unblinking. "You didn't just hide my daughter, Clara. You built an entire empire of lies over the ruins of another family."

Clara’s lips curved into a chilling, humorless smile. "Your father knew what he was taking, and I knew how to keep it. Power doesn't belong to the righteous, Julian. It belongs to those willing to hold the knife and the shield at the same time."

"The game is over," Julian said, his hand resting firmly over the concealed journal inside his jacket. "I have the ledger. I have your surveillance notes, and I have the proof of how you stole the foundation's initial capital."

"You have nothing that can leave this estate alive," Clara replied smoothly.

From behind her, two tall men in dark suits stepped out from the corridor shadows, blocking the exit. Julian’s jaw tightened. He realized Clara had prepared for every contingency, ready to bury the truth permanently beneath the polished floors of the estate.
