Chapter 13: The Final Threshold

The heavy knock rattled the wooden door of the tenement apartment, followed by the sound of muffled voices in the narrow hallway. Julian stood up, stepping protectively in front of the small table where the stolen ledger and personnel files lay exposed. Maren stood beside him, her posture rigid, while Lily stirred sleepily in her cot, rubbing her eyes against the morning light.
Julian unlocked the door and pulled it open. Standing on the landing was not Clara, but two local police officers accompanied by a tall, gray-haired man in a formal gray suit—detective Vance’s senior counsel, armed with an emergency injunction.
"Mr. Julian Vance," the lead officer said, flashing a badge. "We received a formal complaint from Mrs. Clara Vance regarding stolen corporate property and domestic abduction."
Julian didn't flinch. He reached inside his jacket, pulled out the manila folder, and handed it directly to the officer, along with the leather-bound family ledger.
"Before you execute any paperwork, officer, I suggest you open that folder and read the third document," Julian said, his voice ringing with absolute authority. "It details grand larceny, corporate forgery, and multi-generational fraud orchestrated by Clara Vance to misappropriate assets belonging to the legal heirs currently residing in this room."
The senior counsel frowned, stepping forward to intercept the file. He flipped open the manila folder, his eyes scanning the certified legal documents, the surveillance notes, and the historical ledger entries. As he read further, the color slowly drained from his face. He looked up at Julian, then toward Maren, realizing the magnitude of the scandal sitting in his hands.
"This... these are original deeds," the counsel murmured, his professional composure shattering. "If these records are verified, the entire Vance Foundation is subject to immediate receivership."

"They are fully verified," Julian stated calmly. "And I am formally filing counter-charges of unlawful surveillance, harassment, and extortion against Clara Vance."
The police officers exchanged uncertain glances, recognizing that they had walked into a high-stakes corporate war far beyond a simple domestic dispute.
