Chapter 8 - The Gift on the Bed

The screen of Mark's phone glowed blindingly bright in the dim light of the porch as the live feed showed a gloved hand picking up the wrapped box from the edge of the master bedroom bed. The pink ribbon slipped away effortlessly, pooling onto the dark comforter like a ribbon of fresh blood. Clara dropped to her knees, clutching Ethan against her chest as she stared in absolute horror at the tiny screen, her breath hitching in her throat.
"Who is that? Turn it off! Turn that phone off!" Clara sobbed, her maternal instincts screaming as she realized an absolute stranger was roaming freely through the most private sanctuary of their home while the authorities stood paralyzed on the porch.
The police officer drew his weapon, leveling it squarely at Agent Vance. "Federal badge or not, you step back right now or I will put you in cuffs. There is an active intruder inside that house with a civilian minor. Drop your hands!"
Vance raised his hands slowly, though his expression remained infuriatingly calm. He didn't look at the gun pointed at his chest; he looked only at Mark, watching for the exact moment the emotional dam would break.
"You're too late, Officer," Vance said smoothly. "The package isn't a threat to the child's physical safety. It's an information package. A ledger containing everything Mark tried to erase when he faked his death a decade ago."
Mark’s blood ran cold. The word ledger hung in the air like a physical weight, suffocating every thought in his head. He had buried those records deep within an encrypted digital vault, hidden behind layers of firewall protection that only his former self could access. Or so he had believed.
On the screen, the gloved hand inside the bedroom slid open the lid of the wrapped box. Inside sat a single, old-fashioned USB drive encased in black titanium, resting on a bed of shredded black paper.
"That drive contains the names, locations, and operational logs of every sleeper agent you handled in Eastern Europe," Vance continued, his voice dropping to a harsh, accusing whisper. "And more importantly, it contains the names of the people who paid top dollar to have them eliminated. If that drive gets uploaded to the public internet tonight, Mark, every cartel, syndicate, and rogue government agency from here to Moscow will know your real name—and where to find your wife and daughter."
Mark felt the ground shift beneath his feet. He looked down at Ethan, who had stopped crying and was now staring up at him with wide, terrified eyes that held no comprehension of the geopolitical nightmare closing in around them.
"You planted it," Mark said, his voice shaking with a terrifying, hollow rage. "You didn't just track me down. You brought the war right to my front door because you need me back on the chessboard."
"I always said you were my best operative, Mark," Vance replied, lowering his hands slowly. He glanced over at the bewildered police officer, who was still holding his weapon pointed at the federal agent, unsure of what protocol to follow next. "Lower the gun, Officer. Unless you want to explain to the Director of National Intelligence why you interfered with a black-ops asset recovery."

Before the officer could process the threat, a sudden, deafening explosion ripped through the back of the house, shattering the glass patio doors and plunging the living room into immediate chaos.
