Chapter 6 - The Uninvited Guest

The interior light of the black SUV flickered on, illuminating the sharp profile of a man stepping out onto the asphalt. He wore an expensive charcoal suit that seemed entirely out of place in the quiet suburban cul-de-sac. He adjusted his tie with deliberate slowness, closed the car door with a dull thud, and began walking up the driveway with the confident stride of a man who owned the very ground he walked upon. As he stepped into the pool of red and blue light cast by the police cruiser, Mark felt a cold drop of sweat trace the line of his spine.
It wasn't Greg. It was a face Mark had not seen in over a decade—a face from a past he had worked tirelessly to bury, a life he thought he had successfully left behind when he moved his family across the country.
"Director Vance," Mark whispered, the name slipping past his lips like a bitter curse.
The man in the charcoal suit stopped at the foot of the porch steps, ignoring the police officers entirely as his cold, calculating eyes locked directly onto Mark. A faint, knowing smile touched the corners of Vance’s mouth.
"Hello, Mark," Vance said smoothly, his voice carrying an effortless authority that instantly commanded the attention of everyone in the vicinity. He looked around the chaotic entryway, glancing briefly at the shattered cake on the floor and the terrified faces of Clara and Ethan. "I see you're still making a mess of things whenever life doesn't go according to plan."
The lead police officer stepped between them, frowning in confusion. "Sir, do you know this man? This is an active child welfare and cybercrime investigation. You need to step back behind the perimeter."
Vance didn't blink. He reached into his inside jacket pocket with two fingers and pulled out a sleek leather folder, flipping it open to display a gold badge that caught the flashing lights of the patrol car.
"Federal oversight, Officer," Vance said smoothly, his tone leaving no room for argument. "This case has just been elevated to federal jurisdiction. I'll take it from here."
Clara clutched Ethan tighter, her voice trembling as she stared at the federal agent in sheer panic. "Federal? What are you talking about? What does the federal government have to do with a birthday party?" She looked desperately at Mark, her eyes searching his face for answers she knew he had been hiding from her for years. "Mark? Who is this man? What is he talking about?"
Mark stood frozen, his massive frame suddenly feeling fragile and hollow. The protective anger that had driven him to smash the cake moments earlier had completely evaporated, replaced by a deep, suffocating dread. He knew Vance. He knew the kinds of operations Vance ran, the kind of world Vance inhabited, and the terrifying reality of what it meant when Vance showed up uninvited on a suburban porch.
"You set this up," Mark said, his voice barely a whisper as he glared down at his former handler. "Greg didn't just happen to have that video. You orchestrated the whole thing to draw me out."
Vance chuckled softly, stepping up onto the porch and brushing past the bewildered police officers as if they were nothing more than hired furniture. He stopped inches from Mark, his eyes cold and devoid of human warmth.
"You thought you could walk away from the Agency, start a quiet family, and play suburban dad forever, Mark?" Vance murmured softly, leaning in close so only Mark could hear his words. "People like us don't get to retire. And today, your daughter learned a very hard lesson about secrets."

Mark’s fists clenched so hard his knuckles turned white, but before he could react, Vance reached out and tapped the screen of the phone still clutched in Mark’s hand. The display flashed, opening a live video stream from inside the house, broadcasting a room they hadn't looked into yet.
