Chapter 7 - The Hidden Camera

The live stream on Mark's phone screen displayed a crisp, high-definition feed of the master bedroom down the hall. The room was dark, illuminated only by the faint ambient light from the streetlamps outside, but every detail was crystal clear. On the edge of the unmade bed sat a small, wrapped birthday gift—a box tied with a bright pink ribbon—that had definitely not been there when they left the room earlier that afternoon.
Clara gasped, catching sight of the screen over Mark's shoulder. "What is that? Who went into our bedroom?" she demanded, her voice rising in sheer panic. She looked at the police officers, then back at Vance. "Someone is inside our house? There are cameras in our bedroom?"
Vance smiled thinly, ignoring Clara's panic as he turned his attention back to Mark. "You always were thorough with home security, Mark. Motion sensors on the perimeter, smart locks on every door, high-end cameras in the main living areas. But you forgot the most basic rule of counter-surveillance."
Mark’s jaw tightened. "You compromised the smart home network."
"It took my tech team less than twenty minutes yesterday afternoon while you were busy icing that ridiculous cake," Vance replied smoothly, his voice dangerously calm. "Every camera in this house is mine now. Every conversation you've had since this morning has been recorded, cataloged, and analyzed. Including what you whispered to your wife about your past before the guests arrived."
The lead police officer stepped forward, looking between Vance and Mark with a growing sense of unease. "Hold on a second, Agent Vance. I’m running local law enforcement here. If there's an active federal operation tied to this residence, I need to know about it right now. What is going on here?"
Vance didn't even look at the officer. He kept his piercing gaze locked entirely on Mark, enjoying the visible dismantling of the man’s carefully constructed life.
"Officer, your jurisdiction in this matter ended the moment my badge cleared the threshold," Vance said coldly. "Go back to your cruiser, write your report about a domestic noise complaint, and wait for further instructions from my detail. This residence is now under federal quarantine."
"The hell it is!" Mark shouted, his restraint finally snapping. He lunged forward, grabbing Vance by the lapels of his expensive charcoal suit, shoving him hard against the wooden porch railing. The federal agent didn't flinch, nor did his cold smile fade. "You leave my wife and daughter out of this! This was between you and me! Ten years ago, I walked away, and you agreed!"
Before the police officers could draw their weapons to intervene, the front door of the house swung open wider, and a small, electronic beep echoed from the hallway inside.
Clara screamed as the live stream on Mark's phone flickered, changing from a static view of the bedroom to a live feed of the master bedroom door opening on its own. A figure stepped out of the shadows of the hallway into the bedroom, moving directly toward the wrapped birthday gift on the bed.

"Look at the screen, Mark," Vance whispered calmly, prying Mark's hands off his suit jacket with surprising, iron-clad strength. "Someone is about to unwrap your daughter's real present."
