Chapter 1 - The Shattered Frosting

The pristine white multi-tier birthday cake lay in ruins upon the hardwood floor, surrounded by splattered pink frosting and crushed sugar flowers. The air in the living room hung heavy, thick with the sharp scent of vanilla and the metallic tang of sudden adrenaline. Five-year-old Ethan stood frozen in her vibrant yellow floral dress and scuffed pink sneakers, tears cutting clean tracks through the dust on her flushed cheeks. Her small shoulders heaved with ragged breaths as she stared down at the sticky wreckage of her celebration.
Mark stood over the mess, his massive frame trembling with a volatile mixture of blind fury and residual shock. His white shirt was flecked with stray droplets of buttercream, his dark beard bristling as his chest heaved under the strain of his own sudden violence.
"Why did you do that?" Clara screamed, her voice cracking with sheer disbelief as she dropped to her knees to pull the weeping child into her protective embrace. Her blue dress swept the floor, soaking up the pink sugary mess, but she did not care. She glared up at her husband, her eyes flashing with hot, defensive rage. "Are you out of your mind, Mark? It was her birthday cake! She was just about to blow out the candles!"
Mark did not look down at his wife. His jaw was clenched so tightly that a muscle jumped violently near his temple. His white pants seemed to glow under the harsh living room lights, framing a posture of aggressive tension.
"You don't understand," Mark growled, his voice dropping into a dangerous register that rattled the remaining glass ornaments on the nearby shelf. "I had to destroy it. Don't you get it?"
"Get what?" Clara yelled back, shielding Ethan against her chest as the little girl sobbed uncontrollably into the fabric of her shoulder. "You're terrifying her! Look at her! You just ruined everything because of some sudden fit of rage!"
Ethan’s small hand reached out, trembling violently, pointing a shaky finger away from the ruined dessert toward the dark hallway that led to the back patio. She sniffled, her wide eyes reflecting pure terror.
"Don’t let Ethan eat it," the little girl whispered, her voice barely audible over her own ragged breathing. "A man touched Ethan’s cake."
Mark’s face hardened instantly. The anger drained out of him, replaced by a cold, deadly realization that made his eyes narrow into dangerous slits.
"What man?" Mark asked quietly, the silence in the room suddenly turning suffocating.
Ethan pointed a trembling finger toward the shadows of the hallway and wept harder.
"He said nobody would know," she whimpered.

Mark turned slowly toward the dark hallway, his muscles tensing for violence, just as the front door handle slowly began to turn from the outside.
