Chapter 7 - The Flashbulb Storm

The double doors of the grand ballroom exploded inward, not with the disciplined force of federal agents, but with the chaotic, aggressive rush of aggressive journalists and freelance photographers. Blindifying flashes of white light erupted like lightning storms across the polished marble floors, painting jagged, frantic shadows against the wood-paneled walls. Microphones thrust forward on long telescopic poles jabbed into the air, and a cacophony of overlapping voices screamed questions into the void.

"Mr. Vance! Is it true you faked your paralysis for three years?"

"Mr. Vance, what is your response to the federal indictment of Vance Pharmaceuticals?"

"Elena! Look over here! Did you know about the poison?"

Julian stood his ground on the dais, shielding his eyes momentarily from the blinding glare before lowering his hand. His expression remained fiercely controlled, a masterclass in emotional restraint amid absolute pandemonium. He refused to shrink back, nor did he offer the hungry vultures the sensationalized reaction they so desperately craved for their morning headlines.

Arthur Pendelton stepped in front of Julian, raising his cane to block the path of a particularly aggressive reporter pushing past the security tape.

"No statements at this time! Back away or have your credentials revoked!" Pendelton barked, his aged voice carrying unexpected steel.

Julian glanced at the elderly man with a flicker of genuine gratitude before turning his back on the media mob. He walked deliberately toward the private service exit behind the stage, leaving the chaos of the banquet hall behind him. The plaid tartan blanket draped securely over his arm felt heavy, a physical reminder of the heavy armor he had finally shed.

He slipped through the heavy fire door into a quiet, dimly lit concrete corridor that smelled faintly of floor wax and old dust. The silence here was absolute, a stark, beautiful contrast to the screaming mob he had just escaped. He took a long, slow, deep breath, expanding his lungs fully as he walked unassisted down the hallway toward the staff elevators. His legs felt strong, pulsing with the vibrant energy of a man reborn, yet his mind was already racing ahead to the enormous battle awaiting him at dawn.

The private service elevator dinged softly, its brushed steel doors sliding open to reveal an empty car. Julian stepped inside, pressing the button for the underground parking garage where his personal vehicle—untouched for three years—was parked. As the doors began to close, sealing him off from the world, a slender arm shot into the gap, breaking the sensor beam.

Julian’s hand instinctively clenched into a fist, bracing for another confrontation. The heavy steel doors hissed and slid back open, revealing not a reporter or a disgruntled board member, but the young waitress from earlier, still wearing her black and white uniform with the crisp white collar and apron. Her dark hair was slightly mussed, and her breathing was shallow as she looked up at him with wide, intense eyes.

"You dropped this, Mr. Vance," the waitress said softly, her voice steady despite the adrenaline pumping through her veins.

She extended her hand forward, holding out a small, encrypted USB flash drive that bore the distinct red seal of Vance Pharmaceuticals' top-secret R&D division—a drive Julian hadn't realized was missing from his pocket.
