Chapter 11 - The Bloodline Alliance

The subway car rattled violently as it hurtled through the darkened subterranean tunnels beneath the city, casting strobed flashes of amber light across Julian’s face. He sat alone in the corner of the metallic car, his dark hair slightly disheveled, his black tuxedo jacket draped over his knees. The adrenaline from the escape was beginning to fade, leaving a dull, throbbing ache in his muscles, but his mind remained razor-sharp. He pulled out the black USB flash drive, turning it over in his fingers as he mentally mapped out the logistics of their next move.

Twenty minutes later, the train hissed to a halt at a dilapidated industrial station on the northern outskirts of the city. Julian stepped out onto the damp platform, the cool autumn wind biting sharply through his dress shirt.

Waiting beside a battered, unmarked grey sedan parked near the exit was Marcus. Ten years younger than Julian, Marcus shared the same dark hair and piercing eyes, though his frame was leaner, hardened by years of dodging federal targets and navigating the murky underworld of white-collar crime investigations. He wore a heavy canvas trench coat over a simple grey hoodie, his hands shoved deep into his pockets as he watched Julian approach.

Marcus didn't offer a polite greeting or a congratulatory handshake. He simply opened the passenger door of the sedan, gesturing sharply for Julian to get inside.

"You look like hell, brother," Marcus said dryly as Julian slid into the passenger seat, immediately pulling the heavy door shut against the howling wind.

"And you look like you haven't slept in a week," Julian countered, tossing the USB flash drive onto the center console between them. "Plug that into your encrypted laptop. It has the schematics and security overrides for the upstate bunker."

Marcus fired up the engine, shifting the transmission into drive with a hard yank before leaning over to plug the drive into the dashboard port. A series of green diagnostic lines scrolled across the built-in tactical screen, revealing the blueprints of the underground facility buried deep beneath the pine forests of the Adirondacks.

"I pulled strings with a federal magistrate friend of mine twenty minutes ago," Marcus said, keeping his eyes glued to the dark, empty road ahead as they sped away from the station. "We have a federal warrant signed and sealed for the seizure of that facility, but the jurisdiction is murky. If Thomas’s private cleanup crew gets to the bunker before federal marshals arrive, they'll burn the evidence—and everyone inside it—to the ground."

Julian leaned back against the headrest, staring out the window at the blurred shapes of pine trees rushing past in the dark.

"They won't wait for marshals, Marcus," Julian said quietly. "Thomas gave the order before the handcuffs went on. The protocol is total sanitization."

Marcus gripped the steering wheel tighter, his knuckles turning white under the dim dashboard lights. "Then we race them. We have a three-hour head start on their private security detail, but the roads past Kingston are unpaved logging trails. A standard sedan won't make it through the mud."

"I know a shortcut," Julian said, pulling the topographical map up on his smartphone screen and zooming in on an old logging route he had explored during his university days, long before the pharmaceutical empire consumed his life. "Through the old iron quarry. It cuts forty miles off the trip."

Marcus glanced sideways at his brother, a faint, grim smile touching the corners of his mouth. "You always were stubborn, Julian. Even when you couldn't walk, you were planning your escape routes."

"Survival requires foresight, Marcus," Julian replied, his eyes fixed on the dark horizon ahead. "And right now, we’re running out of time."
