Chapter 13 - The Edge of the Abyss

The rear end of the sedan fishtailed violently across the slick gravel, the tires screaming in protest as Marcus fought frantically to regain control of the steering wheel. The sheer drop-off of the abandoned iron quarry yawned hungrily to their right, a black, bottomless void barely concealed by a thin veil of fog.
Another bone-jarring impact slammed into the passenger side of the car as the armored black SUV attempted to pit-maneuver them off the cliff edge. Glass shattered from the rear passenger window, raining glittering shards across the upholstery.
"Hold on!" Marcus roared, shifting down into first gear and slamming his foot hard onto the accelerator.
The sedan’s engine roared, the tires catching a patch of solid granite beneath the mud, violently launching the car forward just as the SUV overcorrected and smashed nose-first into a thick cluster of pine trees lining the edge of the drop-off.
Sparks showered into the damp night air as the SUV’s front end crumpled like paper, its radiator hissing loudly as a massive plume of white steam billowed upward into the canopy.
Marcus didn't look back. He kept the pedal pressed firmly to the floor, rocketing the battered sedan up the final incline of the logging trail as the thick canopy of trees began to thin out, revealing a high chain-link fence topped with razor wire.
Beyond the fence stood the rusted concrete bulkheads of the Cold War-era fallout shelter—the off-grid black site where Thomas’s clean-up crew was currently executing their final orders.
Marcus slammed on the brakes, the sedan sliding to a dramatic halt twenty yards from the heavy steel security gate of the facility. The engine died with a pathetic shudder, leaving only the ticking of the cooling exhaust pipe to break the heavy silence of the mountain air.
