Chapter 6 - The Iron Gates of Justice

The federal agents moved with terrifying efficiency, their dark tactical gear and serious expressions instantly freezing the chaotic panic in the ballroom. Agent Vance—no relation, despite the ironic coincidence—scanned the room, his eyes locking onto Thomas standing pale and trembling near the glowing projection screen. Two agents flanked the dais immediately, their hands resting purposefully near their utility belts as they stepped up the carpeted stairs.

"Thomas Vance? And Elena Vance?" the lead agent called out, his voice cutting cleanly through the lingering murmurs of the terrified elite guests. "Step away from the console and keep your hands where we can see them. You are under arrest for securities fraud, corporate espionage, and intentional poisoning resulting in grievous bodily harm."

Thomas opened his mouth to protest, but the cold click of steel handcuffs snapping onto his wrists silenced him instantly. He was shoved roughly against the wood-paneled wall, his expensive tuxedo jacket rumpled and ruined.

Elena didn't even attempt to run. She stared blankly at the polished marble floor as the female agent gently pulled her arms back and secured her wrists with a second pair of cuffs. As they hoisted her to her feet, her burgundy dress caught on the edge of the brass staging step, tearing a jagged hole in the fine silk fabric—a fitting metaphor for the ragged end of her carefully crafted social ascension.

Julian stood silently at the center of the dais, watching the spectacle with a restrained, melancholic expression. He felt no vindictive joy, only a profound, echoing emptiness where his family and career used to reside. The three years he had spent paralyzed—not by an accident, but by a slow-acting neurotoxin systematically administered by his own wife under the guise of daily medication—had stolen a massive chunk of his life. Yet, as he watched Thomas and Elena being led down the central aisle past the staring, horrified faces of the board members, he realized the nightmare was finally over.

Arthur Pendelton slowly climbed the dais steps, leaning heavily on his cane, stopping a few feet away from Julian. The old man looked exhausted, the weight of the foundation's imminent collapse pressing heavily upon his frail shoulders.

"Julian," Pendelton said softly, his voice gravelly with regret. "We trusted them. We trusted the medical boards they presented. If we had known..."

"You didn't look, Arthur," Julian interrupted gently, though his tone was firm. "Convenient ignorance is still complicity. The board signed off on every restructuring plan Thomas pushed through while I was incapacitated."

Pendelton flinched as if struck, lowering his gaze to the floor. "What happens to the foundation now? Without the Vance name and capital backing, the research labs... they'll go under within the week."

Julian turned away from the retreating federal agents at the doors and looked out over the vast, emptying ballroom. The crystal chandeliers still sparkled overhead, illuminating a scene of absolute devastation.

"The foundation doesn't need the Vance name, Arthur," Julian said, his eyes hardening with quiet resolve. "It needs honesty. And I have the original patents, the uncorrupted research data, and a very clear roadmap to rebuild everything they tried to destroy."

Pendelton nodded slowly, a glimmer of respect returning to his aged eyes. "And you? What are you going to do with yourself now that you've reclaimed your life?"

Julian reached down and picked up the plaid tartan blanket that Elena had so dramatically ripped away from his lap just twenty minutes earlier. He folded it neatly, draped it over his arm, and looked toward the tall arched windows overlooking the city skyline.

"I’m going back to the laboratory tomorrow morning," Julian said simply. "There is a cure for neuro-degenerative nerve damage sitting in our secondary vault that Thomas claimed was a failure. I intend to prove it works."

Before Pendelton could reply, a sharp, piercing flash of camera light exploded from the doorway, followed by a wave of shouting journalists who had finally breached the security perimeter in the foyer.
