Chapter 5 - The Blue Screen of Truth

The glowing blue light from the massive projection screen cast long, distorted shadows across the stunned faces of every guest in the St. Andrew’s ballroom. The loading bar on the screen flashed green, and a dense, scrolling list of financial wire transfers, falsified medical charts, and internal email transcripts filled the display. The topmost document bore Thomas Vance’s digital signature authorizing the deliberate tampering of Julian’s spinal regeneration trial three years ago.
Arthur Pendelton leaned heavily on his cane, his weathered face hardening into a mask of pure fury as he read the bolded headline of the top memo.
"Good God," Pendelton breathed, his voice trembling with righteous anger. "Thomas... you didn't just sideline your cousin. You poisoned him to steal his patents."
Thomas lunged toward the control console on the dais, desperate to pull the plug, but the system was locked behind a multi-factor authentication protocol that only Julian’s personal biometric key could bypass. Two security guards, realizing the winds had irrevocably shifted, smartly stepped back and allowed Thomas to flail helplessly against the unresponsive keyboard.
"It's a fake! It's a deepfake generated by his unstable mind!" Thomas screamed, spinning around to face the roaring crowd, his composure completely shattered. He pointed a shaking finger at Julian. "He’s mentally ill! He’s trying to destroy the company out of spite!"
Julian walked slowly up the carpeted steps of the dais, his steps completely steady and devoid of any weakness. He stood beside the flailing Thomas, looking remarkably composed under the harsh glare of the projector lights. He reached out and gently tapped the corner of the screen, where a live timestamp and cryptographic hash verified the authenticity of the upload.
"The state medical board and the federal securities commission received the master key five minutes before we walked through those front doors, Thomas," Julian said quietly, ensuring only his cousin heard the finality in his words. "The federal agents are already parked outside."
True to his word, the muffled wail of distant sirens began to echo through the double doors of the grand hall, growing louder with every passing second. The guests panicked, some rushing toward the exits while others huddled near the edges of the room, whispering furiously into their smartphones to protect their own investments.
Elena collapsed onto the edge of the velvet-trimmed stage, her expensive burgundy evening gown pooling around her ankles like spilled wine. She looked up at Julian, her face devoid of its usual arrogant armor, replaced by the hollow realization of total ruin.
"Julian... please," Elena whimpered, her voice barely audible over the rising wail of the police sirens outside. "I didn't know about the poison... Thomas told me you were just going to be asleep for a few months. He said it was for your own safety!"
Julian stopped and looked down at his wife for a long, silent moment. The restraint in his expression was absolute, masking years of profound betrayal.
"You helped him wheel me into this room, Elena," Julian said softly. "You played your part wonderfully."

Before Elena could answer, heavy boots pounded against the marble foyer outside, and the grand double doors of the ballroom swung wide open, revealing a squad of federal agents in tactical gear pouring into the hall.
