Chapter 8 - Ninety-Nine Percent

The deafening roar of the overhead water pipes drowning out all other sound in the server room created an atmosphere of absolute, claustrophobic panic. Sparks showered down from the exposed electrical conduits like a cascading waterfall of white-hot steel, illuminating Arthur Vance’s triumphant, twisted grin as he held the heavy steel crowbar poised above the master terminal's primary logic board.
"Stop him!" Elena screamed, shoving Julian aside as she raised her Glock and fired.
The bullet sparked off the thick Lexan glass shielding the mainframe console just inches from Arthur’s right hand, forcing him to duck behind the reinforced steel housing. Without missing a beat, Arthur brought the crowbar crashing down onto the auxiliary processing unit with bone-rattling force. A shower of green circuit boards and severed fiber-optic cables flew through the air as the primary screen flickered from a steady emerald glow to a pulsating, blood-red warning interface.
System format at 99.4 percent, a synthesized robotic voice echoed monotonously through the smoke-filled room. Estimated time to permanent data erasure: ten seconds.
Elena cursed viciously, emptying the remainder of her magazine into the server housing, but the armored casing was designed to withstand small-arms fire. She spun around, grabbing Julian by the shoulders of his dark blue hoodie and slamming him against the damp concrete wall.
"Julian, listen to me!" Elena yelled, her green eyes wide with desperate urgency. "Arthur locked the terminal with a biological override! My DNA won't work because I'm flagged as a rogue asset, but your DNA is logged as the primary benefactor from this morning's street-level handshake!"
Julian stared at her in sheer disbelief, water dripping from his dark hair into his eyes. "What are you talking about? How do I fix this?"
"The biometric scanner!" Elena pointed a trembling finger toward the glowing amber glass panel embedded directly beneath the main terminal screen. "You have to press your right palm flat against the glass before the timer hits zero. If you don't, the server destroys the encryption keys, and every cartel syndicate from Bogotá to Marseille gets our coordinates!"
Across the room, Arthur rose from behind the shattered housing, blood trickling from a shallow cut on his temple, laughing hysterically as he pointed a heavy tactical detonator at the ceiling supports.
"You can't override it, children!" Arthur roared over the hiss of the water and the flashing red strobes. "The moment that counter hits zero, this entire bunker collapses into the subterranean lake, burying us all in a watery tomb!"
Julian didn't hesitate. Adrenaline surged through his veins, washing away the paralyzing fear that had gripped him since morning. He shoved off the concrete wall and bolted across the slick, water-logged floor, his black sneakers sliding dangerously on the wet tiles. He threw his right hand forward, slamming his palm flat against the glowing amber biometric glass just as the system counter flickered to 0.01 percent remaining.
The room went dead silent for a fraction of a second. The red strobes froze. The robotic voice cut off mid-syllable.
Then, a soft, melodic chime echoed through the mainframe speakers, and the screen flashed a brilliant, blinding shade of solid blue.
Biometric verified. Master override accepted. Welcome home, Mr. Vance.
Arthur’s laughter died instantly in his throat. His eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated horror as he stared at the blue screen.
"No," Arthur whispered, his knees buckling beneath him. "That's impossible. The algorithm... I wrote the algorithm!"
Before Arthur could lunge for the detonator, Elena stepped smoothly around the console, raised the butt of her empty Glock, and brought it down hard across the side of Arthur’s jaw with a sickening crack. Arthur collapsed onto the wet floor, unconscious before he even hit the concrete.
Julian exhaled a long, shuddering breath, sliding his hand off the glowing glass panel. He looked down at his trembling palm, realizing with sudden, chilling clarity that he was no longer just an ordinary guy who handed out sandwiches on a sunny street corner. He was now the absolute master of a global criminal empire.
Elena holstered her empty pistol, her face deadpan as she looked down at their unconscious great-uncle.

"We need to move, Julian," she said quietly, turning toward the shattered service corridor. "The system override just triggered a silent alarm at Interpol headquarters. And they aren't sending investigators this time; they're sending drone strikes."
