Chapter 10 - The Safe House Siege

The heavy oak door of the safe house splintered inward with a deafening crash, showering the hardwood floor with jagged shards of wood and deadbolts. Muzzle flashes instantly illuminated the darkened hallway in strobing bursts of blinding white light as automatic gunfire chewed through the drywall and shattered the framed portraits hanging on the walls.

"Down!" Elena screamed, tackling Julian off his chair and dragging him behind the heavy oak dining table as bullets whined overhead, embedding themselves deep into the thick timber.

Julian clutched his black backpack to his chest, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped animal. The acrid smell of gunpowder filled the air, stinging his eyes and throat.

"How did they find us so fast?" Julian yelled over the deafening rattle of assault rifles firing in the next room.

"The encryption keys on your laptop!" Elena shouted back, drawing her Sig Sauer and leaning out from behind the table to return fire down the dark hallway. Two muffled grunts echoed from the corridor, followed by the heavy thud of a body hitting the floor. "The moment the master server was unlocked, it broadcast a faint ping to every satellite node in the network! We're walking beacons!"

Another wave of tactical operatives surged through the shattered front doorway, throwing a flashbang grenade directly into the dining room.

"Flashbang!" Elena shrieked, grabbing Julian by the collar of his dark blue hoodie and shoving him face down onto the floor, covering his head with her arms just as the magnesium charge detonated with a concussive blast that felt like a physical blow to the chest and a blinding flash of searing white light that left their ears ringing with a painful, high-pitched whine.

Through the haze of smoke and white noise, heavy combat boots stepped over the threshold of the dining room. A towering mercenary in matte-black ballistic armor walked up to the edge of the dining table, his assault rifle leveled directly at the floor where Julian and Elena lay.

"Target acquired," the mercenary growled into his shoulder radio, his voice distorted by a heavy electronic modulator. "Securing the asset and the hard drive now."

Before the mercenary could pull the trigger, a sleek black stiletto blade materialized in Elena’s right hand. With blinding, cat-like speed, she lunged upward from the floor, driving the blade deep into the unarmored joint of the mercenary's knee. The man let out a choked scream of agony, collapsing sideways onto the hardwood. Elena snatched his assault rifle from his failing grip, rolled onto her back, and emptied a three-round burst into the chest of the second operative stepping through the doorway.

"Get up, Julian! Move!" Elena yelled, hauling her brother to his feet as he stumbled blindly, clutching his black backpack like a lifeline.

They bolted through the kitchen at the rear of the safe house, slamming the heavy reinforced fire door behind them just as a hail of bullets chewed through the wooden panels. Elena threw her weight against the emergency exit leading out into the torrential downpour of the backyard.

The cold rain hit Julian’s face like a physical shock, clearing the smoke from his lungs as they sprinted across the muddy lawn toward the dense tree line of the pine forest. Behind them, the safe house erupted in a massive fireball as a secondary explosive charge detonated, lighting up the stormy night sky in a brilliant orange inferno.

"Keep running!" Elena shouted over the roar of the fire and the howling wind. "If we stop moving now, we're dead before sunrise!"
