Chapter 7 - The Subterranean Blackout

Emergency red strobes slammed on instantly overhead, casting long, frantic shadows across the glass walls and the churning black water below. The tactical operatives cursed in unison, their night-vision goggles glowing a faint, eerie green in the crimson gloom.
"EMP strike!" one of the mercenaries shouted over the intercom static. "We've been compromised! Main grid is down!"
Arthur Vance’s laughter echoed sharply through the cavernous room, bouncing off the concrete curves like breaking glass. Julian dropped low, pressing his palms against the cool glass floor as the sound of heavy hydraulic machinery grinding to life vibrated through the foundation of the subterranean vault.
"You think a few mercenaries and a theatrical entrance can erase fifty years of empire building, Elena?" Arthur’s voice boomed from the shadows, disembodied and mocking. "Your father taught you how to shoot, but I taught him how to own the men who pull the triggers!"
Elena didn't hesitate. She fired three rapid rounds toward the head of the mahogany table, the muzzle flashes illuminating her grim, determined face. The heavy lead bullets shattered crystal decanters and splintered mahogany wood, but Arthur was already gone, swallowed by the labyrinthine service tunnels behind the dais.
"Move! Now!" Elena commanded, grabbing the front of Julian's dark blue hoodie and hauling him to his feet with terrifying strength. "If we don't reach the extraction elevator in the next two minutes, this entire underground facility will flood automatically to destroy the evidence."
Julian’s breath came in ragged, burning gasps as he let his sister drag him through the shattered remains of the reinforced steel door. The corridor outside was pitch black save for the blinking amber hazard lights mounted along the low ceiling. Armed operatives moved in a tight, disciplined wedge formation around them, their assault rifles sweeping every dark corner and intersecting hallway.
"Where are we going?" Julian yelled over the deafening whine of the automated flood valves beginning to cycle in the distance.
"To the server core," Elena shouted back, her boots splashing through an inch of freezing water that was already pooling across the concrete floor. "Arthur didn't just transfer the money to himself. He initiated a global wipe sequence. If that server finishes formatting, every cartel hit squad on the planet will receive our encrypted home addresses simultaneously."
Julian’s blood ran cold. The image of the homeless man on 4th Street flashed violently through his memory—the trembling hands, the tearful eyes, the sheer, manipulative perfection of the performance. He had walked out of his luxury apartment that morning thinking he was doing a good deed, only to trigger a global death sentence for himself and his sister.
They turned a sharp corner into a vast server room lined with towering racks of blinking mainframe units. Water was cascading from a ruptured overhead pipe, hissing violently as it hit the high-voltage electrical conduits. In the center of the room, standing before the master control terminal with a hardened steel crowbar in his hand, was Arthur Vance.
Arthur turned to face them, his expensive suit soaked and ruined, his gray hair plastered against his forehead, but his eyes burned with absolute, psychotic triumph.

"You're too late, children," Arthur sneered, raising the crowbar high above his head. "The upload is at ninety-nine percent. Say goodbye to the Vance legacy."
