Chapter 5 - The Cartel's Ledger

The subterranean boardroom seemed to shrink instantly, the oxygen turning thin and heavy as Arthur's words settled over Julian like a physical shroud. Julian stared at his great-uncle, his mind violently rejecting the sheer scale of the nightmare he had just stepped into.

"Cartel money?" Julian choked out, his voice cracking as cold sweat beaded along his hairline. "What are you talking about? Vance Industries builds medical equipment and logistics software. We supply hospitals across the entire eastern seaboard."

Arthur let out a low, gravelly laugh that echoed chillingly off the curved concrete ceiling. He turned back toward the mahogany table, picked up a thick leather-bound ledger with singed edges, and tossed it onto the glass surface.

"Hospitals, Julian? Is that what your father told you while he paid for your Ivy League tuition and your luxury downtown loft?" Arthur sneered, walking back to his seat and leaning against the high back of the leather chair. "Those medical containers weren't shipping insulin or surgical lasers. They were moving liquid fentanyl and synthetic precursors across international borders under diplomatic immunity. And yesterday, when you handed me that water bottle, its built-in micro-scanner synchronized with my retinal implant, authenticating the master transfer code."

Julian took a trembling step forward, his eyes darting toward the heavy steel door. Every instinct screamed at him to run, to smash through the glass wall into the dark lake below, to escape this madness. But his legs felt like lead.

"You trapped me," Julian whispered, the realization dawning with sickening clarity. "The homeless man on the corner... the takeout container... it was all a setup from the very beginning."

"Of course it was a setup," Arthur snapped, his aristocratic charm vanishing instantly, replaced by a ruthless, razor-sharp edge. "A tiger doesn't wait for dinner to wander into its cage; it lays a trap and watches the fool walk right inside. Your father left you as the sole legal beneficiary of the parent corporation. That means the federal indictments, the international arrest warrants, and the cartel hit squads are coming for you, Julian. Not me."

Before Julian could process the terrifying weight of the accusation, a series of muted red warning lights began to flash rhythmically along the baseboards of the subterranean vault. A computerized alarm chimed twice, followed by a robotic female voice echoing through the hidden intercom system: Unauthorized perimeter breach. Sector four ventilation shaft compromised.

Arthur’s expression froze, the cold confidence draining from his face as he stared at the glowing biometric console on the mahogany table.

"That's impossible," Arthur muttered under his breath, leaning over the console. "No one knows this location exists except..."

The heavy steel door behind Julian didn't just open—it exploded inward in a blinding flash of white light and flying shrapnel, sending a shockwave that knocked Julian violently to the glass floor. Through the swirling smoke and debris, a heavily armed tactical team wearing black ballistic armor and unmarked helmets surged into the room, their assault rifles raised and locked directly on Arthur and Julian.

At the front of the strike team stood a woman in a trench coat, her face partially obscured by tactical goggles. She lowered her weapon slightly, stepped over the twisted steel of the blown-down door, and stared down at Julian with icy, familiar green eyes.

"Get up, little brother," she said coldly, cocking the slide of her Glock pistol. "You just inherited a war."
