Chapter 4 - The Price of a Plastic Bottle

The sharp scent of old parchment, expensive bourbon, and ozone hung heavily in the subterranean boardroom as Julian stood frozen on the threshold. The floor beneath his sneakers was made of thick, reinforced bulletproof glass, revealing the dark, churning black water of the subterranean lake meters below. At the head of the colossal mahogany table, the man who had been sitting on a piece of cardboard just thirty minutes ago now poured a finger of amber liquid into a crystal tumbler with absolute, unhurried grace.

"Close the door, Arthur," the man said without looking up, his voice retaining the rich, resonant timbre that commanded absolute silence.

The scar-faced agent clicked the heavy steel portal shut behind Julian, leaving him entirely cut off from the outside world. Julian’s chest heaved as he gripped the straps of his black backpack, his knuckles aching from the tension.

"What is this?" Julian demanded, his voice echoing off the curved concrete walls of the underground vault. "Who the hell are you playing at? If you wanted to rob me, you could have just taken my wallet on the street instead of dragging me down into a Bond villain's lair."

The man in the bespoke suit took a slow sip of his bourbon, then finally raised his piercing gray eyes to meet Julian’s furious gaze. The unkempt gray hair had been neatly trimmed, and the ragged beard was gone, revealing the sharp, aristocratic jawline of a ruthless corporate titan.

"Your father taught you to speak before you listen, Julian—a fatal flaw in any negotiation," the man said smoothly. He gestured to an empty leather chair directly across from him. "Sit down. We have a family legacy to dismantle, and the clock is ticking faster than you realize."

Julian didn't move. He stood his ground on the glass floor, his jaw clenched so tight his teeth ached.

"My father is dead," Julian repeated, though the words tasted hollow in his mouth. "I buried him. I signed the death certificate. The coroner certified the body."

"The coroner certified a John Doe pulled from the East River wearing your father's signet ring and monogrammed watch," the man corrected coldly, setting his crystal glass down with a sharp clink. "A corpse is remarkably easy to fabricate when you own the municipal morgue and half the city council. Your father didn't die, Julian. He stepped down because he was weak. He grew soft. But me? I founded Vance Industries before your grandfather even learned how to launder money. I am Arthur Vance—your great-uncle, the man your father wrote out of history to steal my throne."

The revelation hit Julian like a physical blow. He staggered backward, his heels clicking against the glass floor as his mind struggled to reassemble the history he thought he knew.

"Uncle Arthur?" Julian whispered, the name tasting foreign and dangerous on his tongue. "My father said you died in a plane crash over the Atlantic in nineteen-ninety-four. He said you embezzled millions and fled the country."

"Your father lied with the same breath he used to breathe," Arthur replied, standing up slowly from his leather chair. He walked around the mahogany table with the predatory grace of a wolf closing in on a wounded deer. "He locked me in a black-site prison for twenty-two years while he ran our empire into the ground, turning it into a front for international arms trafficking and bio-pharmaceutical experimentation. And yesterday, federal regulators finally caught up with the paper trail."

Arthur stopped just inches away from Julian, towering over him despite his advanced age. He reached out and tapped the plastic water bottle still protruding from the side pocket of Julian's black backpack.

"You thought you were performing an act of charity on 4th Street," Arthur whispered, a dangerous smile playing at the corners of his mouth. "In reality, you handed me the biometric encryption key I needed to unlock the master server and transfer every single offshore account back into my personal possession. Welcome to your inheritance, Julian. You are now legally responsible for twenty billion dollars of cartel money."
