Chapter 5 - The Dash Through the Hedge

The splintering of the front door sounded like a gunshot inside the confined hallway. Clara didn't hesitate. Adrenaline surged through her veins, overriding her grief and terror, turning her body into a machine driven by a single directive: protect Toby. Scooping the toddler into her arms, she sprinted down the narrow corridor toward the laundry room, her white sneakers sliding slightly on the hardwood before finding traction on the linoleum.
The heavy thud of multiple pairs of boots echoing on the front floorboards signaled that Mark's diversion had worked only partially; at least one intruder had stayed behind to secure the front while others rushed toward the kitchen. Clara dropped to her knees beside the washing machine, shoved the wicker laundry basket aside, and yanked upward on the hidden brass ring of the crawlspace hatch. It gave way with a rusted groan, revealing a dark, damp descending ladder leading into the concrete foundation of the house.
"Hold onto Mama tight, Toby," she whispered fiercely into the toddler's ear. He nodded, burying his face against her neck, his small arms locking around her shoulders with surprising strength.
Clara descended the ladder into the subterranean chill, her shoes finding the dirt floor below just as heavy footsteps pounded into the laundry room overhead.
"Clear! The back door is wide open, but he's not in the yard!" a gruff voice barked from above, followed by the sound of heavy equipment being tossed aside. "Check the lower levels! Sweep the entire foundation!"
Clara’s heart hammered against her ribs as she ducked beneath the low-hanging wooden floor joists. The crawlspace smelled of damp earth and old concrete, a claustrophobic maze that stretched out beneath the neighboring properties. She crawled on her hands and knees, dragging Toby safely against her chest, wincing as sharp rocks dug into her palms. The beam of a heavy flashlight cut through the grates above them, illuminating dust motes dancing in the stale air just a few feet behind where she crouched.
"Hey! Found an access hatch leading toward the back alley!" shouted another voice from further down the line.
Clara pushed forward through the darkness, her breath coming in ragged gasps. She spotted the rusted iron grate leading to the drainage ditch near the neighbor's hedge, exactly where Mark had said it would be. She shoved her shoulder against the rusted iron bars. They resisted, held fast by years of overgrown weeds and corrosion.
Behind her, the sound of boots dropping into the dirt crawlspace echoed through the hollow foundation.
"I see movement near the northern vent!" a voice bellowed.

With a final, desperate surge of strength, Clara threw her entire weight against the iron grate. It popped loose with a screech of rusted metal, tumbling outward into the blinding afternoon sun, just as a heavy hand clamped down tightly around her ankle.
