Chapter 11 - The Engine Cab

Clara scrambled up the iron rungs of the diesel locomotive’s rear ladder, her arms straining under the combined weight of Toby and her own exhaustion. She shoved the heavy steel cabin door open with her shoulder and tumbled inside, pulling the toddler safely in behind her.
The interior of the engine cab was bathed in the dull green glow of instrument panels and control displays. The heavy smell of diesel fuel and hot oil hung thick in the air. Before Clara could catch her breath, a tall figure stepped out from behind the narrow control console, weapon drawn.
Clara screamed, throwing herself defensively over Toby, but the weapon dropped to the floor with a metallic clatter before it could be raised.
"Clara!"
Mark rushed forward, his face bruised and streaked with soot, his dark green cardigan torn at the shoulder, revealing a dark stain of dried blood beneath. He dropped to his knees beside them, pulling Clara and Toby into a desperate, crushing embrace that bridged the three agonizing years of their separation in a single breathless moment.
"You're alive," Clara sobbed into his shoulder, the rigid armor of her survival instinct finally cracking as she felt the steady, real beat of his heart against her own. "They said... we heard shots—"
"I had to draw them away from the house," Mark whispered fiercely, burying his face in Toby's reddish-brown hair. "I led them toward the creek, but they were tracking the encrypted signal on the flash drive. I ditched it in the marsh."
"The drive is gone?" Clara pulled back, staring into his exhausted eyes. "Mark, that was your only leverage—"
"It was a trap," Mark corrected, his voice urgent as he stood up and quickly locked the cabin door from the inside, throwing the heavy deadbolt. "The data on that drive wasn't just accounting evidence; it was a dead-man switch programmed to upload automatically if I didn't input a daily cipher. They didn't want the drive back—they wanted to intercept it before the upload completed at sunset."
A heavy fist pounded against the outside of the cab door, followed by a harsh, amplified voice echoing across the rail yard.
Mark Miller! Surrender the locomotive control system immediately. You are surrounded by federal jurisdiction. Step out with your hands visible.
Mark didn't hesitate. He turned to the central control panel, throwing several heavy brass switches and pressing the engine’s master ignition button. The massive diesel engine roared to life with a deep, floor-shaking vibration that rattled the cabin windows.
"They can't stop a rolling freight on this line without tripping the national dispatch grid," Mark said, his hands flying across the throttle levers as the locomotive shuddered and began to inch forward along the iron rails.

Through the front windshield, Clara saw two tactical agents sprint onto the tracks ahead, raising their weapons and aiming directly at the engine glass. Mark slammed his hand down on the air horn lever, unleashing a deafening blast that shook the evening air, and pushed the throttle all the way forward.
