Chapter 14 - The Final Terminal

The emergency radio speaker hissed with a burst of high-frequency static before an automated dispatch voice echoed through the darkened cab with chilling clarity.
Attention all inbound rolling stock. Central terminal district has been placed under emergency quarantine due to an active chemical spill on platform three. All arrivals must reroute to the industrial rail yards in sector nine.
Mark froze, his hand hovering over the console controls. He stared at the speaker as the realization hit him with the force of a physical blow. "There's no chemical spill. That's a trap."
"Sector nine is completely isolated," Clara said, her voice dropping into a register of cold dread. "There won't be federal marshals waiting there. Only the people who want this ledger buried permanently."
Mark’s jaw tightened. He reached for the master brake lever, but before his fingers could grasp the metal, the engine's digital display screen flickered, went black, and then flashed a stark warning message: REMOTE OVERRIDE ENGAGED. SYSTEM CONTROL LOCKED.
"They've hacked the onboard navigation," Mark said, his voice urgent as he smashed his fist against the unresponsive control panel. "They're steering us directly into the abandoned spur at sector nine."
Outside the windshield, the scenic skyline of downtown Chicago vanished, replaced by the gloomy, rusted infrastructure of the industrial rail yards. Towering grain silos and abandoned warehouses loomed like decaying monoliths in the moonlight. The locomotive began to decelerate automatically, its heavy wheels squealing as it was guided away from the main trunk line and onto a dead-end spur surrounded by high chain-link fences and armed shadows waiting in the darkness.
"What do we do?" Clara asked, her eyes darting frantically around the cab before locking onto Mark. There was no time for hesitation, no room for error.
"We don't stop," Mark said, grabbing a heavy iron wrench from the maintenance kit beneath the dash. He smashed the side window of the cabin, shattering the reinforced glass into a web of harmless fragments that he quickly punched outward with his bare hands, letting the cool night air rush inside.
He turned to Clara, lifting Toby into his arms and strapping the toddler securely against his own chest using the heavy canvas utility belt. "Clara, when I tell you, you drop down onto the gravel bed while the engine is still moving. Roll away from the tracks."
"I'm not leaving you behind again," Clara said fiercely, grabbing his arm.
"You aren't leaving me," Mark said, his brown eyes locking onto hers with absolute, unwavering devotion. "I'm going to jump with you. We finish this together, or we don't finish it at all."

As the locomotive slowed to a crawl near the dead-end bumper, the cabin doors were blown open from the outside with a deafening blast of compressed air, and several armed figures in dark tactical gear swarmed across the threshold.
