Chapter 12 - Breaking the Grid

The massive diesel locomotive surged forward with bone-crunching momentum, the heavy iron wheels grinding against the steel rails as it accelerated out of the depot siding and onto the main trunk line. Outside the reinforced windshield, the two tactical agents dove frantically out of the path of the oncoming train, their weapons clattering onto the gravel ballast as the engine barreled past them at terrifying speed.
Clara pulled Toby away from the glass, holding the toddler tightly against her beige top as the cabin swayed violently with the motion of the accelerating train. Mark stood firmly at the control console, his eyes locked on the darkening horizon where the rail line stretched out toward the state border like a pair of silver ribbons disappearing into the twilight.
"Where are we going?" Clara asked over the thunderous roar of the diesel motor.
"To the federal district court in Chicago," Mark said without turning around, his hands steady on the throttle levers. "It's the only place where jurisdiction shifts out of the local agency's control. If we can reach the federal magistrate before midnight, the grand jury testimony goes on public record. Once it's public, they can't bury it, and they can't bury us."
The radio console on the dash crackled to life, spewing a torrent of frantic static before a cold, authoritative voice cut through the speaker.
Engine 404, reduce speed immediately. You are operating unauthorized rolling stock on a restricted commercial line. This is a federal direct order.
Mark reached over and flicked the radio transmission switch, leaning in close to the microphone. "This is Mark Miller. I am turning myself in—along with the primary witness ledger detailing Operation Gateway—directly to the Federal District Attorney in Chicago. If you try to derail this train, you destroy the only existing proof of your department's embezzlement scheme. Over and out."
He snapped the switch off before a reply could be transmitted, cutting the frequency entirely.
Clara walked up beside him, placing her hand gently over his knuckles on the throttle lever. Mark looked down at her, a tired, genuine smile finally breaking through the hardened lines of his face. He reached out with his free hand, gently brushing a stray lock of light brown hair from her forehead.
"I'm sorry I left, Clara," he murmured, his voice thick with emotion. "I thought I was saving you. I didn't realize that running was the exact trap they wanted me to fall into."
"We're together now," Clara replied softly, leaning her head against his shoulder while Toby watched them with wide, curious eyes from the floor seat where he was playing quietly with a small plastic bolt he found near the console. "We finish this together."

Before Mark could answer, a violent jolt shuddered through the entire locomotive, throwing Clara off balance and sending a shower of sparks flying from the electrical panel above their heads.
