Chapter 10 - Beneath the Iron Tracks

The corrugated interior of the drainage pipe was pitch black and reeked of stagnant water and rust. Clara dropped to her hands and knees, balancing Toby securely against her chest with one arm while feeling along the cold, damp steel walls with the other. Behind her, Ray moved with the stealth of an old predator, pulling a heavy sheet of corrugated tin over the pipe entrance to obscure it from any passing drone or foot patrol.
They crawled in silence for thirty yards until the faint sound of boots clanging against metal grating above them signaled that they were directly beneath the active rail platform. Through the small drainage slits near the top of the pipe, slivers of harsh halogen light cut through the gloom, casting long, fractured shadows across the damp concrete floor.
"Hold it right there," Ray whispered softly, halting his movement just ahead.
Clara froze, pressing herself flat against the pipe wall. Above them, a pair of heavy tactical boots paced back and forth across the metal grating. A man’s voice crackled through a handheld radio, the sound echoing clearly down the metal tube.
—sector four is clean. No sign of the target near the boxcars. Check the main switching station by the water tower.
"That's our cue," Ray muttered, pushing himself forward into the final stretch of the pipe.
A moment later, they emerged into the dim, cavernous expanse beneath the central loading platform of the rail depot. Towering stacks of shipping crates and rusted freight cars formed a labyrinth of iron and shadows. In the distance, the throbbing engine of a massive diesel locomotive idled on the central track, venting thick plumes of white steam into the cooling evening air.
Clara stood up slowly, brushing damp dirt from her blue jeans and adjusting Toby, who was staring wide-eyed at the towering freight cars around them. "Where would Mark go?" she asked, her voice echoing softly in the cavernous space.
"Only one place," Ray said, pointing toward the rear of the diesel locomotive where a small metal ladder led up to the conductor’s cabin. "If he’s trying to get out of the county without using the highways, he’s boarding that freight before it gets the clearance signal to pull out for Chicago."
As they stepped out from beneath the platform into the open rail yard, a sharp beam of light swept across the ground just twenty yards to their left.
"Hey! You there! Freeze!" shouted a security guard in a dark tactical vest, his flashlight beam locking directly onto Clara and Toby.
Ray reacted with astonishing speed, grabbing an empty metal bucket from a nearby cart and hurling it across the tracks. It clattered loudly against a rusted oil drum, drawing the guard's attention and flashlight beam just long enough for Ray to shove Clara and Toby behind the massive steel wheel of an empty flatbed car.
"Run for the locomotive!" Ray yelled, drawing the guard's fire by stepping out into the open. "Go!"

Clara didn't hesitate. Clutching Toby tightly to her chest, she sprinted across the gravel ballast toward the rear ladder of the idling diesel engine, her white sneakers crunching frantically against the stones as a warning shot cracked overhead.
