Chapter 9 - The Corporate Predator

Marcus stared at Arthur Sterling across the hood of the police cruiser, the cold night air biting through the fabric of his navy suit. The puzzle pieces clicked into place with horrifying clarity. Julian, Elena, the fake inheritance, the drained bank accounts, the street-corner extortion—it wasn't a random family betrayal. It was a corporate hostile takeover disguised as a domestic tragedy.
"You orchestrated the whole thing," Marcus said, his voice dangerously low as he pulled his arm free from the local cop’s grip. The officer started to reach for his cuffs again, but Arthur raised a single, manicured hand, signaling them to stop.
"Let him speak, Officer," Arthur said smoothly, walking closer with a confident, measured stride. He pulled a silver cigar case from his pocket, extracting a slim Cuban cigar without lighting it. "Marcus, you’re a brilliant engineer. But you’re entirely unmanageable. You refused every buyout offer we put on the table. You wanted to keep running the company your way, ignoring market trends and shareholder value."
"So you fabricated a debt, corrupted my brother, and used my wife to destroy my family from the inside out?" Marcus snarled, taking a step forward before the local officers instinctively shoved him back against the cruiser.
Arthur chuckled, a dry, humorless sound. "We didn't force Elena to do anything. She came to us. She wanted out of this marriage six months ago, but she didn't want to leave empty-handed. We simply provided the legal framework and the incentive. Julian needed a way out of his gambling debts, and your wife wanted the high-society life without the suburban mortgage."
"And my children?" Marcus’s voice cracked slightly, the memory of Maya’s bleeding ankle flashing in his mind. "You had them sent to the streets to sell oranges?"
"That was Elena’s theatrical touch," Arthur replied smoothly, shrugging his shoulders. "She thought it would create a compelling narrative if the press got a hold of it—make you look like an abusive, neglectful monster who forces his kids to work while he dines on imported caviar. It was meant to ensure you lost custody permanently during the divorce proceedings."
Marcus’s hands curled into tight fists at his sides. The restraint he had maintained all evening was wearing dangerously thin. "Where are they taking Julian and Elena?"
"Oh, don't worry about them," Arthur said, leaning in closer. "They’re being processed as we speak. But here’s the reality of your situation, Marcus: If you sign over your remaining fifty-one percent controlling shares of Vance Technologies tonight, I’ll drop the domestic disturbance charges, call off the local precinct, and ensure your children remain in your custody."
Marcus looked past Arthur at the local officers standing by the squad cars. Their expressions were entirely blank, clearly reading from a script written long before they arrived at the gates.
"And if I refuse?" Marcus asked.

Arthur’s smile vanished, replaced by a cold, predatory glint. "Then child protective services will be dispatched to remove Maya and the twins within the hour. And you’ll spend the next ten years fighting federal wire fraud charges from a maximum-security cell."
