Chapter 13 - The Bloodline Deception

Marcus picked up the heavy manila envelope with fingers that felt unusually cold. He tore the top open, sliding out a thick stack of legal documents bearing international seals from a hospital in Geneva, Switzerland, dated thirty-five years ago.
"What is this?" Marcus asked, flipping through the pages of birth certificates, medical charts, and DNA test results.
Clara leaned against the granite countertop, letting out a long, weary sigh. "Your father didn't go bankrupt because of bad investments, Marcus. He spent every cent he had trying to hide you from Julian’s father—a man named Viktor Vance, who wasn't your uncle at all, but a ruthless syndicate financier who swapped you at birth in the hospital to steal your maternal family’s rightful estate."
Marcus stopped turning the pages. The words swam before his eyes, rewriting every foundational memory of his childhood, his family, and the bitter rivalry that had defined his entire adult life.
"Swapped at birth?" Marcus whispered, looking up from the papers to stare at Clara. "Are you telling me Julian and I aren't even brothers?"
"Not by blood," Clara confirmed, nodding slowly. "Viktor planned the entire thing. When your real father discovered the truth years later, Viktor had him discredited and driven to financial ruin. Julian inherited the vendetta—and when he found out you had built a massive tech empire using seed capital from your maternal grandfather’s hidden trust, he came back to steal it all legally."
Marcus felt the room spin. All the anger, the corporate warfare, the betrayal by Elena—it was all part of a decades-long vendetta orchestrated by a family he didn't even belong to.
"And Elena?" Marcus asked, his voice barely audible over the hum of the refrigerator. "Did she know?"
"She found out three months ago when Julian showed her the DNA files to blackmail her into helping with the corporate takeover," Clara said, her voice breaking with grief. "She was terrified. Julian threatened to take Leo away from her if she didn't play along with the scheme on Fourth Street. She wasn't just a willing partner, Marcus—she was a prisoner in her own home, just like you."
Marcus closed the manila envelope slowly. He looked down at the crate of fresh oranges sitting on the counter—the very fruit his children had been forced to sell on the street in the freezing rain, all as part of a twisted psychological pressure campaign designed to break his spirit.
"A prisoner," Marcus repeated bitterly. He walked over to the kitchen window, staring out into the dark, quiet backyard where the federal convoy's amber lights were finally fading into the distance.
"Where are the kids?" Clara asked, glancing toward the dark hallway.
"They're in the study," Marcus replied. "Safe."
Clara reached out, placing a trembling hand on Marcus’s arm. "What are you going to do now, Marcus? Julian and Arthur Sterling are in federal custody, but Viktor’s network is vast. They won't stop until every last asset you own is drained."
Marcus turned around, his dark eyes hardening with a quiet, terrifying resolve. He didn't look defeated anymore. The corporate executive was gone, replaced by a man who finally knew the exact shape of his enemies.
"Let them try," Marcus said, walking briskly toward the hallway. "They wanted my empire? I'm going to give them a federal penitentiary instead."

He pushed open the study door to check on Maya, the twins, and Leo—only to find the room completely empty, the window wide open to the cool night air, and a single fresh orange rolling slowly across the wooden floor.
