Chapter 1 - The Weight of Bitter Citrus

Marcus stood in the grand, high-ceilinged dining room of his suburban estate, his chest heaving beneath the tailored fabric of his dark navy suit. His jaw was clenched so tight a muscle ticked rhythmically near his trimmed beard. Across the room, the lavish spread of imported cheeses, roasted meats, and crystal carafes of orange juice mocked the devastation burning inside him.

Elena, his wife of a decade, slowly turned her head from the table. Her long, dark wavy hair shifted over the shimmering fabric of her glamorous gold evening gown. Dangling crystal earrings caught the crystal chandelier light, casting fractured glints across her pale, terrified face.

"You sit here," Marcus said, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that vibrated through the silent room.

Elena dropped her silver fork. It clattered against the porcelain plate, the sound sharp and intrusive. "Marcus, please. Let me explain before you—"

"Quiet!" Marcus roared, stepping forward. He didn't look at the three young children cowering near the arched mahogany doorway behind him. Instead, his dark eyes locked onto the eight-year-old boy sitting rigidly at the head of the table. The boy wore a brand-new designer sweater, eating a pastry with silver utensils.

Marcus stepped closer to Elena, his face contorting into an expression of white-hot, calculated fury. He slammed his palm onto the mahogany table, making the crystal glassware jump.

"Enjoying my money with your son," Marcus shouted, spittle flying as his voice cracked with raw betrayal, "...while you sent my children into the streets to sell oranges?!"

Elena shrank back, her breath hitching in her throat. She looked utterly cornered, the glamour of her gold gown suddenly looking like a cheap theatrical costume masking a brutal deception.

"They aren't just yours," Elena whispered, her voice trembling violently. "And you don't know the whole truth about why Leo is sitting at this table."

Marcus leaned in, towering over her with grim, implacable malice. "I know enough. I saw them on Fourth Street. Maya and the twins holding out mesh bags of fruit in the freezing rain, begging strangers for coins."

Elena burst into tears, her face collapsing in deep sorrow and despair. She wept uncontrollably, her shoulders shaking beneath the gold fabric.

As the tension peaked, the front door clicked open behind the children, and a strange man walked in, holding a legal document.
