Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Ransom

The flashing red and blue lights seemed to pulse in time with the roaring blood in Marcus’s ears. He looked back toward the open front door of his sprawling estate. Through the shattered entryway, he could see the faint outlines of Maya, the twins, and Leo huddled together near the ruined dining table, waiting for him to return.

"You think you've won," Marcus whispered, his voice dangerously level.

Arthur exhaled a soft breath, tapping the unlit cigar against his knuckles. "I haven't just won, Marcus. I've restructured. Capitalism doesn't care about your family values or your moral outrage. It cares about equity. And right now, you have zero equity left."

Arthur pulled a sleek, leather-bound digital tablet from his briefcase, tapping the screen a few times before holding it out toward Marcus. A glowing electronic document illuminated the dark pavement, displaying a complete transfer of corporate ownership and asset forfeiture.

"Sign on the dotted line, Marcus," Arthur urged softly, pressing a stylus into Marcus’s open palm. "Give me the fifty-one percent. Save your children from the foster system. Go back inside, clean up the broken glass, and pretend none of this ever happened."

Marcus looked down at the stylus. The digital ink sensor glowed a steady, hypnotic blue. He raised his hand slowly, positioning the tip of the stylus just above the signature line.

Arthur’s eyes gleamed with undisguised triumph. He leaned in, anticipating the final stroke that would hand over a hundred-million-dollar empire for pennies on the dollar.

Marcus pressed the stylus down—not on the signature line, but directly onto the hardware override button at the bottom of the tablet, holding it down for a full five seconds.

The screen instantly flashed a bright crimson red, displaying a bold system warning: FACTORY RESET INITIATED. ALL SECURE DATA WIPED.

Arthur stumbled back, his face contorting in shock. "What the hell did you just do?!"

"You forgot one crucial detail, Arthur," Marcus said, his voice echoing across the quiet suburban driveway as he tossed the ruined tablet onto the asphalt. "I didn't just build the software for Vance Technologies. I wrote the core security architecture. Every server, every backup, every offshore account is tied to a dead-man’s switch."

Before Arthur could reply, the headlights of the two local police cruisers flickered and died. Simultaneously, every single light inside the sprawling estate went pitch black. The smart-home intercom system crackled once, loudly, before emitting a high-pitched digital screech.

A heavy, low-frequency hum vibrated through the ground beneath their feet, followed by the distant sound of helicopter blades chopping through the night sky from miles away.

Arthur turned frantically toward the local officers. "Arrest him! Take him down right now!"

The two officers reached for their cuffs, but before their hands could touch Marcus’s shoulders, the sky above them lit up with a blinding array of green laser sights. Down the long suburban street, a convoy of three matte-black federal vehicles tore past the gates, their emergency beacons flashing a piercing, authoritative amber.

The lead vehicle skidded to a halt, blocking the exit. The doors flew open, and a dozen armed federal marshals spilled out into the street, their weapons drawn and aimed squarely at Arthur Sterling and the local police officers.

"Federal Cyber Crimes Division! Nobody move!" a voice bellowed through a bullhorn, cutting through the night air with absolute finality.

Marcus stood tall amidst the chaos, his navy suit unwrinkled, his dark eyes locked onto Arthur’s pale, trembling face as the net finally closed from the top down.
