Chapter 14 - The Empty Window

Marcus froze on the threshold of the study. The cool night breeze billowed the white sheer curtains inward, fluttering them like ghostly specters in the moonlight. The room was deathly quiet.

"Maya? Leo?" Marcus called out, his voice sharp and laced with sudden panic.

There was no answer. He strode quickly across the room, his heavy shoes clicking against the hardwood floor. He knelt by the wide-open window, looking down at the soft flowerbed below. Fresh, muddy footprints broke the soil, leading away toward the perimeter fence where the security gate stood slightly ajar.

Clara hurried into the study behind him, her eyes widening in horror as she took in the empty room. "Where are they, Marcus? Did someone take them?"

Marcus didn't answer immediately. He spotted a small, crumpled piece of paper caught on the window latch. He reached out, peeled it off the metal, and unfolded it. Scrawled in childish handwriting—clearly written by eight-year-old Leo under duress—were four short words: We have your real family.

The blood drained from Marcus’s face. The federal sweep, the arrest of Julian, the takedown of Arthur Sterling—it had all been a diversion. Viktor Vance’s primary syndicate network hadn't been dismantled at all; they had been waiting in the shadows, using Julian and Arthur as disposable pawns to distract Marcus while the real strike was executed.

"Viktor," Marcus snarled, crushing the note in his fist.

He stood up, pulling his phone from his pocket with lightning speed. He dialed direct emergency dispatch for the Federal Cyber Crimes Division, his thumb hovering over the call button.

"Marcus, wait!" Clara gasped, grabbing his arm. "If you call the feds, Viktor will use the children as leverage! You saw what they did to Leo and Maya on Fourth Street—they won't hesitate to hurt them to get the offshore access codes!"

"I am not calling the feds for a rescue mission, Clara," Marcus said, his voice terrifyingly calm, devoid of all human warmth. "I'm calling them to authorize a full tactical containment strike."

He pressed the call button, holding the phone hard against his ear as it rang once, twice—and was answered instantly by Agent Miller.

"Vance," Miller's voice barked through the speaker. "We secured Sterling and your brother. What do you need?"

"Cancel the transport, Miller," Marcus commanded, striding out of the study and toward the foyer. "Viktor Vance has my children. He’s moving them through the old shipping yards off Pier 42. I want a full tactical perimeter established within twenty minutes, and I want zero negotiations."

"Mr. Vance, if we move in without authorization on a syndicate boss like Viktor—"

"I don't give a damn about authorization!" Marcus roared, his voice shaking the glass panels of the front door. "You want the offshore accounts? You want the entire encrypted syndicate ledger? I will hand over every single byte of data on a silver platter—the moment my children are back in my arms. Am I understood?"

A heavy pause hung over the phone line before Agent Miller replied with grim professionalism. "Understood, Mr. Vance. We're rolling out now. Meet us at Pier 42 in fifteen minutes. Do not go in alone."

Marcus hung up without answering. He turned back toward Clara, who stood trembling in the hallway.
