Chapter 9: The Autumn Harvest

By October, the Hudson Valley was ablaze in brilliant shades of gold, amber, and crimson. The orchard branches bowed heavy with ripe Honeycrisp and Macintosh apples.
The entire community gathered at the Vance farm for the annual harvest festival.
Long wooden tables were arranged beneath the trees, loaded with hot apple cider, warm cider donuts, roast squash, and homemade bread. Children ran through the rows of trees, filling wooden bushel baskets with fruit, their laughter echoing up toward the crisp blue sky.
Noah was the star of the harvest, guiding his school friends through the orchard in his little wagon pulled by Barnaby.
""Grandpa’s trees make the sweetest apples!"" Noah proudly announced to his teacher, handing her a large, shiny red apple.
Julian sat on a wooden bench beside Helena, watching their son with an overwhelming sense of gratitude.
""Do you ever miss the city, Helena?"" Julian asked softly, resting his arm around her shoulders.
Helena leaned her head against his neck, taking a deep breath of the crisp autumn air scented with woodsmoke and sweet apples.

""I spent five years in that mansion feeling like a ghost in my own life, Julian,"" she whispered. ""Here, every time the wind blows, I feel like I’m breathing for the first time.""
