Chapter 12: The Secret Journal
On a quiet evening in January, while Noah was asleep in his cozy attic bedroom under heavy down duvets, Helena brought down a small wooden box from the closet.
Inside was a journal Clara had kept during her five years as a domestic worker in Manhattan, titled: *Voices from the Threshold.*
Helena flipped through the pages, reading Clara’s handwritten observations of the families she had served: the lonely heiresses, the neglected children, the cold business moguls who bought silence with money.
""You should publish this, Clara,"" Helena said, looking up from the kitchen table.
""It was just my way of remembering who I was when I had to wear a uniform, Helena,"" Clara replied humbly, pouring hot chamomile tea into two ceramic mugs.
""No, Clara,"" Helena insisted. ""This is a record of human dignity. It reminds people that the workers who clean our floors, who cook our meals, who hold our children when they cry—they are not invisible. They are the guardians of our homes.""
